It's been a 16 year struggle for me to figure out what I want to do, and more recently I learned a little more so out of those 16 years, those last 2 have been a search for meaningful work.
We need work to matter. Even if this sounds cringe, as in work for Christ and Christendom. I'm not saying you need to go build the next Troyes cathedral for a spot to sleep and some bread. But you can bet your ass if it took 400 years to build the next great cathedral and you knew your whole life would be in it, you would be satisfied as you died with it yet uncompleted.
Around here I don't know what to do. I refuse to make parts nobody needs in a factory. I refuse to make chips and junk food for Lays, I refuse to make Pepsi or beer. I refuse to make dog food or car parts, I made those for 4 miserable years.
So I don't know where to look. I'm lost. I've been lost for a long time.

When I worked at Starbucks, What I would tell newer staff that would grouse at having to make so many frappes all day, every day was that it's what's keeping us employed and we're all here voluntarily.
At the end of the day, it beat tarring roofs, that's for sure.
I've told this story before, but we had an opener that was pretty high-strung and one summer morning she had had it with making frapps. She decided to start telling customers the blenders were broken.
Here's the thing: in addition to being a high volume store with heavy frapp sales, we were the closest store at the time to the regional office. Corporate partners came in all the time. One of them overheard her say this to a customer and told our DM when she got to work.
I come into my mid and the opener was on her last ten. that's when the dm comes in a panic saying she managed to get us two blenders we can borrow until we get new ones. I look at her like she's crazy, then i said "why would we need blenders?" the DM explained what she had heard, I didn't know anything about it (the opener stopped telling customers that before I came in).
They immediately sent her home, took her off the schedule, then called her in like 3 days later to be termed.
Lesson learned: don't fuck with the frappuccino. the siren doesn't like her milkshakes being maligned.

That's a pretty good story.
I wish we knew what happened to her after. It's a good point that all those losers addicted to sugar are keeping you employed and it's easier than hot factory metal work, but I would like to know where she works now. Where she ended up happy, if she has at all yet...
Obviously we'll never know but it would make a great complete story that people need to hear at least in all the threads about jobs on this site.
