You're delusional. Even in the case where shorts are force liquidated and do close at a loss, most of the shareholders will get fucked and lose everything when the squeeze resolves. Either that or you see the formation of some new insane cult like GME, a bunch of delusional bagholders chasing a fundamentally worthless equity forever. Kind of similar to bitcoin or other crypto plays - it might take a generation for the losses to show up in GME, but eventually the interest will die. Any wealth there is imaginary. It's impossible for the collective shareholder base to ever cash out because there's nothing of actual value underlying their positions.

To understand the resolution of a short squeeze, take BBBY as the recent example. It's showing 36% of outstanding shares are short.
So due to those shorted shares being resold, there are effectively 136% shares in total as long positions. Of this 136%, only 36% can profit off short liquidations, past that point your back to 100% shares - no shorts remain.
36%/136% = ~26% of the overall long positions that are capable of profiting off shorts. That leaves 74% of current longs who can only benefit from the fundamental value of the company over the long term. For BBBY that's a zero.

Essentially, a short squeeze is still just a pump and dump scheme. Most holders will lose, at the expense of massive profits for the pump organizers and early entrants. It doesn't matter at all that shorts are losing money. Latecomer long positions will get fucked much harder than any shorts. If you buy into a pump like this, YOU are the real exit liquidity, not any shorts.

Finally, going back to BBBY, Ryan Cohen just sealed the pump and dump by selling his entire 14% stake. That's equivalent to half the shorts right there. The short squeeze is over. Congrats to any remaining bagholders. You gave him some excellent exit liquidity.

One aspect I'm not touching on in this post is gamma squeezes, but be aware those resolve similarly.

Yes it's the first thing every investor should be doing. A fun trick is that REITs allow you to invest in real estate but normally your dividends get taxed like normal income (dividends are normally up to 20% but this lets it go up to like 45%)

BUT if you throw your reits or etfs that deal with reits (VNQ or FREL) into your roth ira, all the real estate payments are completely tax free.

I would try to achieve this with 30% VTI, 30% UPRO, 20% TMF and 10% VNQ. Even in shitty periods like 2000-2009, this seems to perform similar to a non-leveraged portfolio with a similar structure. You're overthinking it. Only hold VNQ separate in your roth ira ($6000 a year)to avoid getting fucked by income tax (reits get taxed like normal income). This gives you a slight inflation hedge.

Then hold some international (10% VEA - europe and japan, 10% VWO emerging markets, and VSS international small cap) on top of your american stock market. This protects you even further from inflation. I wouldn't go higher than 30% until emerging pops off or japan stops shitting the bed.

And finally put the final 70% just into the american stock market. A total market cap is exactly what you need and Fidelity's FSKAX is perfect. Absurdly low expense ratio of 0.015% and performs just as well as the S&P 500 while also giving you mid, small, and micro cap exposure.

As I said, this could resolve into a new GME or AMC situation with perpetual bagholders dumping paycheck after paycheck to prop up their bags while the CEOs of these companies scheme about how they can pull off some mass-dilution to pad their own wallets.
I'm not going to fight that, I'm just posting a warning to those who are dumb enough to think that a short squeeze is some magical formula for free money. It's fucking not. It's a pump and dump with a different name. That's all it is. That's all it'll ever be.

Yes, the meme stock phenomenon is rooted in making stocks too difficult to short. RDBX shares will turn into .27c worth of another company's shares - straightforward short from their current $10 price. Except borrow fees touched 1000% - your entire profit is gone if you hold your short for a month. Plus you can't find shares to borrow anyway. Plus you probably get margin called halfway through. You can buy put options - but the premium is nearly equal to your profit margin.

A really fun example that still exists today is DWACW. This is a warrant that, in 2028, turns into a DWAC share at an exercise price of $11.50. DWAC trades for $30, DWACW trades for $7. This doesn't make sense because DWACW + $11.50 = DWAC. $7 + $11.50 is not $30.

There is arbitrage here. Sell DWAC for $30, buy DWACW for $7, wait 6 years, exercise and cover your short for $11.50. Profit $11.50, per share, guaranteed. The profit was even larger when DWAC was $100 and DWACW was $30.

Even after the DWAC pumps, the price inconsistency between DWAC and DWACW still exists, because nobody has figured out how to safely hold a large negative number of DWAC shares, covered by a large positive number of DWACW

I have $800 worth of Aug 30 C’s I sold short against my Dec 30C longs that are expiring tomorrow. Feels pretty comfy anon.
If SIGA closes above 30 in March ‘23, the $3.5k I dropped on my 50 25/30C spreads becomes $25k.
Pretty good reward/risk profile if you ask me.

Thanks anon, I did not know that about REITs. My tax knowledge is basically
>IRA pre-tax contribution, taxed at distribution, roth other way round
>Short term cap gains taxed like regular income, long (> 1 yr) as cap gain
I mainly wanted to see if I could make a portfolio that captures upside without getting fucked too hard by volatility drag, VTI/UPRO is just an example and I'm fine structuring my holdings in other ways. My time horizon is long so I'm ok riding the leverage rollercoaster. I'm familiar with the cheap fidelity/vanguard mutual funds.

The plan is to max out Roth IRA before putting anything in a taxable account

With the 1970s thing I mainly meant that I don't have data on REIT performance under such circumstances so idk how this portfolio will perform, I don't think it's likely to happen. I tested it under other scenarios though like 2000-2010, 1995-2005, etc, and it does ok there.

Not worth rebutting. I specified directly that I would not touch on gamma in that post. I'll expand and clarify that I really meant I wasn't gonna dig into derivatives at all, but since you're pushing, I suppose I can add a bit of basic info.

To start, I hope you understand that for every buyer there's a seller. Think about that. Seriously.
A bought put can be negated by purchasing stock and selling a call.
A sold put can be negated by shorting stock and buying a call.
This goes both ways, so a sold call can also be negated by buying puts and purchasing some direct stock.
Delta hedging is a strategy of scaling in/out of stock to cover exposure to sold options that avoids these direct pairs. MMs utilize it because you can't always find buyers/sellers of negating positions at equivalent strikes at the same times, although the strategy is susceptible to rapid squeezes especially near key expiration dates.

The real question is: How many call buyers (or put sellers) want to be left holding stock when we reach expiry? Do these traders even have liquidity in their portfolios to convert their call options into real stock?

My guess is that most of these bearish looking options positions you question are MMs hedging exposure or random traders attempting to profit off the insane IV in this week's options. These types of plays always reach some absolutely retarded levels on OTM options strikes as the pump hits it's peak.

I should disclose that I haven't actually looked in depth at BBBY's options though. I don't really give a shit. This is mostly conjecture based on previous situations that were similar.

haha shows what you know. Futures prices are always somewhere between VIX and the furthest future, which doesn't move much no matter what VIX does unless there's a long term change. So if VIX goes up to let's say 50, the furthest future contract will remain priced at 28, maybe 29, and every other contract will be between those two. So if VIX is at 50 but the nearest contract has a few weeks to expire it might not even reach 40, and that's because the market expects VIX to come back down by expiry, that's why all future contracts become closer to the expected future mean as their expiry becomes more distant.

See VIX is the red line, and futures are the other one. They get closer to the red line until they meet and expire, so the red line is always the lowest or the highest. No matter what happens that means the future contracts can't swing as much as spot VIX.

1) Calculate how many gays are in the first world. That's your maximum market size.
2) Estimate the total number of expected yearly cases (you can take a city like NYC, eyeball its case data - https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/data/health-tools/monkeepox.page - and divide it into the population)
3) Multiply by 100%/50%/20% TPOXX administration rates.
4) Remember that SIGA was at $7/share when all they did was sell our national stockpile 375k courses per year on a rolling basis.

it doesn't have to be weekly - it could be bi-weekly like most paychecks. some people are getting paid tomorrow no matter what

People who are paid bi-monthly (I assume that's what you meant) typically get paid on the 1st and the 15th. I don't think anyone except poor people are getting paid tomorrow, and they're not going to dump their entire paychecks into some meme stock that's already petering out.

Yep now conditions are too tight for most of Americans but its also indicative of our business culture being too expensive to get started since the cost of buying food out is incredibly more expensive than making it yourself.

Credit card balances have also increased dramatically.
I’m curious what % of that is on 0% interest credit cards though. Right now you can get 0% intro APR for 12-15 months and then get 0% APR with a balance transfer for 12-15 months to a different card again and again. It’s possible to defer expenses for a couple years with the current credit climate.
Smarter to take the cash you would spend paying credit card debt and grow it via stocks or bonds or some shit then pay it when deferral capabilities cap out.
