Depends on the area. Here in Caliwali I mortgaged my 1br for $2000/mo ($1200 payment $400 interest/insurance $400 HOA) whereas renting the same would have been $1800/mo for an equivalent (I could have done $1600 if I wanted to share a laundry with 10-to-a-room Mexican families). 1.5 years later, it's still $2000/mo for me, vs $2000/rent. In another 1.5 years I'll have saved at least $43k in what would have otherwise went straight into the landlord's pocket.
