>About to graduate from a very highly ranked university (not Ivy League, but in the top 30) with bachelor's in Business Administration
>One IT internship a coupe years ago
>My prospects are either GREAT because there's a labor shortage and companies are desperate for employees, or TERRIBLE because no one is hiring and getting a job is more difficult than ever, and I'm fucked.
Which is it? I have no real world perspective on this, besides anecdotes and what is being reported in the media (which appears to be inaccurate, or at least misleading).

I haven't been employed since the beginning of this year after losing my job working at a credit union. Learning programming or linguistics is my plan b if my trading doesn't work out by end of year.

As depressing as that sounds, I doubt I could even get a management job right out of school.
>>50867718
Could you elaborate, anon? I regret not getting majoring in Finance (didn't realize I wanted to until it was too late to switch majors). And yet, the one person I know who has a Finance degree is currently selling/demonstrating products in Walmart and Home Depot...
(Albeit, her degree is from a third-tier school, like 250 on US New's rankings)
>>50867727
I actually really liked my econ classes, but I'm under the impression its a fairly useless degree unless you get a PhD.

If you learn Python and some basic automated excel manipulation you'll beat them out. Business degrees are useless in the current business environment. I only think econ is worth it because it's the major all of the wealthy people take, it requires math if you go to a good school and you gain very good public speaking skills. My company wont hire finance grads unless they know how to program the difference in output is too large to justify hiring anyone else.

just cut plan A short.
trading is a meme, it only works when you stash several thousand dollars in an asymmetric bet that 50x's. then you can swingtrade a fifth of that in 2% chop on 5x margin to keep yourself entertained while you wait for a few other bags to do what your first did.

Yeah it's useless if you want to be an economist because you'll need a masters for that role. If you pair it with a technical skill it's in high demand everywhere, everyone i know that took economics + STEM got jobs before their second year and are now in some upper management role. It's the most robust business major and the base of knowledge allows you to participate in any other business specialisation and be useful.

Econ majors can perform well in Management, Finance, and Marketing. Advanced econometrics gets you to the level where you can atleast talk to quantative roles and understand what their saying.

I understand that. I'm curious what kind of jobs are/were you expecting to get out of school? I know finance majors from "target" schools go into high finance (investment banking, hedge funds, etc.), but I don't have much perspective on what kinds of jobs normal people with finance degrees can actually obtain. I know there's corporate finance (FPAA, Treasurey, etc.), but that seems an awful lot like accounting. I assume there's jobs to be had in commercial banking, but I don't know anything about it.

Oh no, the one language in the universe the babelfish is unable to translate... Zoomer.
>>50867952
Can you actually do anything with a masters in Economics, rather than PhD? I'm seriously considering graduate school, and if it's useful I could definitely see myself mastering in econ. I'm really not interested in getting a doctorate in anything, though. That's a big leap, imo.
>>50868019
I regret not majoring in Finance. I simply wasn't aware of its merits when I applied to the college. You declare your major as soon as you are accepted into the university, and they've made it nearly impossible to change majors after your Freshman year.
>>50868054
Its upper 20s on US News. Numerical rank aside, its an old, fairly large, well regarded school with a nationally recognizable name. I only mentioned this to convey that my degree isn't from a community college, for-profit school, or something unknown that sprang into existence 5 years ago. Since thread is about current job prospects, I think that's relevant.

I got offered an entry-level banking position starting at $70k at JPMorgan but it wasn't worth it because I was making more money trading daily than I would've living in a city with all the higher expenses compared to where I live now.

Why didn't you just take the job and move your trading to a weekly strat?

>> No.50868400

>>50868273
I messed up my post, the highest I could make is $70k gross income. The position was $48k pre-tax, after tax would be ~$38k, yearly housing would be -$14.4k, plus food, gas, other expenses would net be $20k of savings per year. The additional $30k would be the maximum limit of how many financial products I can sell to clients. It was essentially a glorified sales job, which I've already done and don't want to do again. I did the math and It would lead me to earn roughly $2.8k - $4.4k per month as take home pay while saving A LOT of time. I've literally made that kind of money just trading in a week. The job just wasn't worth it in my mind. All my expenses would basically double from what I'm currently paying now, stress with having to meet quotas, and risk of relocating when the economy is slowing as an entry-level position, new employee.

Thanks for the info, anon. I have two further questions, if you don't mind me asking:
1. What sort of title did this job have? I'm trying to get a better idea of what an entry level positions actually is.
2. How much capital do you have for trading, and what are you trading (stocks/options, futures, crypto)? I have a $45k account I use to trade stocks and options. I made some nice pocket money, but no where near enough to actually live on.

It was a Banker level 3 position. I managed to skip 1 and 2 because I have previous experience working at a financial institution. I have $60k now, it was $63k earlier last week. I tripled it from $20k since being unemployed beginning of the year up to this point. I speculate heavily and focus the majority of my free time "looking into" financial markets, news, trends, and micro/macro while actually still being able to do literally nothing outside of market hours except enjoying my leisure. I've speculated about making trades but not entering them to see if I was right and the majority of them seem to work out but I manage risk since technically I don't have a secured income. >>50868741 What this guy said, you got scammed like me.
