Now have 7 billion people on the planet do the same at the same time. That's why it doesn't scale on-chain with 1 meg blocks. A combo 32 meg blocks like Satoshi originally designed and a 2nd layer like LN, and perhaps it can. All chains are trying to address this issue, but typically fail at the initial distribution which causes centralization.
