The definitive no bullshit guide to becoming a software engineer:
1. install linux
2. read this book >>50844793 and do the exercises. It's not a C++ book, it's a beginner's programming book that incidentally uses C++. C++ is the best language to start with because it sits at the intersection of high level and low level, so it hides a lot without preventing you from being able to drop down when you need to. You'll learn important OOP concepts from the get go like encapsulation etc.
3. Pic related should be read alongside as a companion. It will give you a basic grounding in how computers work (memory, io, concurrency, persistence, etc)
4. Next you need to learn data structures and algorithms (DSA). I'd recommend reading CLRS (it's a little mathy, if this scares you there's many other good texts), then practice by solving leetcode problems
5. Now you're ready to dive into operating system internals (Modern Operating Systems is a canonical text). For practice work on projects like writing your own shell, malloc, a basic filesystem, etc
6. Then I would learn networking (Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach). As practice write a simple multi threaded server
7. If you've reach this stage you now have a solid foundation in computer science and you're ready to learn how to actually design systems and build software. Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software is a good primer but the learning at this step will be continuous
8. Learn databases. I just read "Database Internals: A Deep Dive into How Distributed Data Systems Work" and can't recommend this book enough
9. Finally, learn distributed systems.

At some point you have to learn how compilers work because so far they've seemed like magic. After step 4 is probably the best time to dive into the internals, but since you'll be using a compiler from step 2 you need to at least get familiar with what they are, how to use it, and the different stages involved in compilation.

Happy hacking!

>rinse and repeat 2-3x
>enjoy your 6fig salary
You learn wayyyyy faster on the job than self-studying from a textbook. Most CS algorithms and theory is dumb shit you'll never use, mostly you'll be doing .sort() and copying code from stackoverflow when that doesn't work.

Only downside is you will have to make a lot of lateral moves to earn a lot. But that's still way better than solo-studying a bunch of theory nobody gives a shit about (for a salary of $0, too). You'll spend months or years years grinding in solitude only to end up with a middling job anyways--only people who get FAGMAN jobs right off the bat are ivy league grads anyways. Everyone else has to move laterally into those kinds of companies.

The Indians know this. Do you think Ramesh studies CS theory? No, he just spamcodes copy-paste stackoverflow.
>bu-bu-but muh code quality
We're talking about the best way to make money fast, not write good code.

Oh and even at FAGMAN, the only reason you need to know theory and algorithms is for the interview. After that, >95% of people work on inane crud apps. Only the 200 IQ turbo-autists get to work on the core products.

It will never be oversaturated.

In all other high IQ professions, work is done in response to a fixed rate of external demand, perhaps linearly increasing with population size. But in software, demand for work increases geometrically with the amount of software in existence. This is because built software requires maintenance and enhancements, so more work. Not only does the underlying demand for software functionality drive demand for developers, but the software itself begets more demand, since it "sticks around" in a way that, say, a court case doesn't once finished, taking Lawyers and the Law as an example.

Not only this, but there is limitless scope for and minimal regulation around software. Contrast this with, say, engineering, where there is only a fixed amount of space in which to do engineering projects and massive regulatory barriers around doing big projects. So in spite of engineering work also begetting more work in the form of maintenance and enhancements like software, unlike software it is fundamentally restricted in multiple dimensions.

It is actually pretty easy to learn the foundational stuff. After that it's just miserable because every new thing you learn feels more like you're learning a trick. You just wait for that moment when you suddenly are coding A.I. and shit, but it just never happens because that's not really what coding is. You're always just basically building big intricate calculators or automating things where the automating process is more trouble than it's worth 90% of the time.

>> No.50851654

>>50847525
Let's not get ahead of ourselves
First, get a standard calculus text and dive in. You should also get linear algebra and discrete math books as well; make sure the discrete text is proof based.

Once you're a couple chapters in to your discrete book (you will want to have covered basic proposition and higher order logic, and basic proofs), you may begin learning programming and computer architecture. As a litmus test, if you don't know what this statement is

∀P((0∈P∧∀i(i∈P-->i+1∈P))-->∀n(n∈P))

you aren't ready to take the reins of a computer.

Now, forget what you do know about computer programming:

First, you learn boolean logic operations
then, you learn transistor logic
then, you learn how to build functional units from logic gates
then, you learn CPU design
then, and only then, you learn assembly language
then, after you have mastered assembly language (not dabbled, but mastered it), you learn C,
then you may learn the higher-level languages of your choice, but you will always use C and assembly as your primary languages because everything else is unnecessary bloat.

By this time you should be finished with your first wave of math and ready for the next: abstract algebra, analysis, multivariate and vector calculus, and, after you have progressed a way in those, topology.

Finally, you become familiar with topoi, and study the internal logic of categories
then familiarize yourself with (general) type theory, and its applications to programming. I also recommend studying how to reformulate mathematics in terms of globular categories for use in automatic theorem proving, because there is an inherent programming-like 'feel' to it.

his analysis is ignorant of market forces and economics. he's confusing scaling software production with scaling software sales. more market competition means prices come down. software developers are paid relative to how much money they can make the company. more market competition means lower prices means lower pay for software developers. ask anyone who works in SaaS sales how competitive the marketplace is.

i think it's only a matter of time before this "thing" that is in "everything" (software) becomes commoditized, regardless of how skilled or difficult it is. a good example of this is industrial scientific research. highly specialized experts (PhD holders) with a decade of education are lucky to make $100-140k/year in pharma. yet boot campers with 12 weeks of javascript framework experience can make nearly that same amount of money. does this sound sustainable? or does it sound far more likely that the market value of their skillset will, over time, be driven down by the usual practices?

honestly can't wait for the backlash on this (in the west). we don't need a *smart* version of everything, at a certain point you know it's make-work for programmers. by parents bought a digital kettle when the old one sprang a leak. wtf why do you need to program something that just boils water? fuck costco for not even carrying a normal kettle.

yeah, it seems that way to you because you have no idea what you're talking about.

been in the industry for 5 years now, you don't need to know much at all to be a junior dev. but at the senior level in a company where you're writing high-performance, highly scalable backend software you absolutely need to know how stuff works at the lower level or you'll never be able to make optimizations.

I know Python + SQL decently because it’s piss easy and my boss thinks I’m a genius for just doing the shit we do in excel 1000x more efficiently, but recently started learning rust so I could feel like a “real programmer”. Guess what I’m realizing is my lack of knowledge of structuring projects to write apps and shit and I honestly am more interested in analytics than software. Questions are:
1) best path towards being a great analyst including RDBMS and ETL stuff? Where do I start if I already have an alright understanding of statistics (factor analysis, regression/ANOVA)
2) is there even a reason to git gud at rust or should I just learn further into Python
3) why does anyone even use C over Rust?

ya...most people are happy to make $200-300k at the mid level for their career.

It's hard to say prepping to be senior at company where optimization matters is important. We just need a relatively few people in the world that can do that.

If you're going to biz analytics, there's no reason to pursue Rust as more than your hobby/side thing.

Not sure, but I'd imagine someone already knowing C/C++ has a certain inertia.
