As long as the federal reserve maintains a target of 2% inflation, 401ks will make sense as a vehicle for long-term capital appreciation. Outside a 401k, your capital growth will be hampered by inflation passively providing you capital gains in USD terms, even if there's no real growth in value in your portfolio. Even if the stock market effectively never moves higher again, it would still be reporting gains just due to the continuous USD devaluation. The transaction fees and dividend taxes will cut into your long-term exponential growth curve.
You'd have to massively outperform just to match this tax-free growth. The compounding difference is insane.

The only thing better than putting money in a 401k is putting money towards buying a house. Real estate has tax advantages if you live in it, and if you never move then you'd never pay capital gains. It's the single best investment you can make.

Naturally, any money you want to spend on yourself before you hit 60 years old is also better off outside the 401k, although you could put some money in Roth IRA/401k vehicles to allow partial early withdrawals with no penalties. IRAs are substantially better than 401ks due to the increased investment freedom they offer, so ideally you want to shift jobs every 5 years so you can rollover funds into IRAs that you control.
