So i can buy 500 dollars of SPY the sp500 etf, or put 500$ into a mutual fund that tracks the sp500. the problem arises because SPY is currently 400$, so i have 100$ not invested. if you have 100,000$ this isnt a big deal, but the small fractions mean you have some left over cash to hold or put towards some other ETF. ETFs are the newer modern way to invest

When referring to "ROI", this is the yearly value I'm getting from the stock I'm holding.
Does that mean that if I hold a (average) 10% ROI stock for 11 years, by the end of year 11 I'll have 110% of the money I initially invested and every year after y10 will be profit? i.e. I won't have to sell to benefit
Or does it mean that my stock has increased in value by 10% and that's my profit if I want it liquid.
