I had a dream once about a block chain where the hash function didn't just depend on the previous block (and by dependence chain, all previous blocks) but could also depend on future blocks. This meant there were several parallel chains, which weren't forks but different potential solutions to the same chain, and whenever all "post-dated" block references in the chain were accounted for the parallel chain collapsed into a single chain. I can't remember if this was supposed to be a solution to the failure of crypto security once quantum computers get good or if it was supposed to be a distributed quantum computer itself, but it was an exciting dream.
