I've never had a credit check for a rental. Just cash for a deposit and proof of income.

Even then, a credit check doesn't have a step by step breakdown of each debt, it's just a credit score. Get a secured credit card and pay it off every month and it'll be fine in a year or two.

An easy way to get out of a lease.

Find something in your apartment that is old, and deemed a requirement for "habitable"

Like the water heater, turn it off, find a way to beak it without it appearing to be sabotage, such as pouring water in the fuzebox or cutting one cable with a bad tool for the job, a knife or some scissors. (There are cleaner less obviously shitty ways to do this if you know water heaters) Inform the landlord that the water heater is broken. They will want to send over a repairman immediately, watch what the repair man does. Wait for him to realize the problem and fix it. Act interested in fixing it. Watch what he does remember what he does. Thank him, and immediately undo what he does a day later.

Your legal story is, the water-heater broke, landlord sent a guy over to fix it, he didn't fix it, landlord is irresponsible and can't keep the unit habitable. There are tons of other ways to do this, lower risk than breaking the lease imo.

You do risk people finding out you deliberately sabotaged the unit. Repair man might know. But I would bet on people being lazy and your landlord being cunt enough the repair man doesn't report it.

This happened to me when I was a Freshman in university. Had a job, got let go after 2 months because they decided to lay off a lot of people to save money. Ineligible for unemployment because I was a student. Basically, I got evicted and have a collection on my credit report for the remainder of my lease. Approaching 7 years now, haven't paid a dime and it should fall off my credit report. (I have a 750+ credit score even with collections).

This is exactly how my leases are worded, but I'm not a jew, so if some wants to break a lease, I usually just charge them an extra months rent to cover the place until I get a new tenant.
