Do I accept a new job that pays 15k more than my current position but with almost a 1 1/2 hr. commute time (there and back)? I've been with my current employer for 2 years and have plateaued, but my commute is 5 mins. Down the road and I work a hybrid schedule (half of the week in office half week out). At what point is a higher salary worth sacrificing comfortability?

Also I'm going to have to fake a Covid vaccine card. Anyone have success doing this?

I have a follow up interview tomorrow. I may push for a higher salary. I'm not aggressively pursuing other employment but I only work tier 1 help desk and want to eventually advance my career. This is a better job with some more opportunities but I'm apprehensive about leaving my comfortable job with 0 commute for a small raise.

Calculate the gas mileage twice a day, five days a week, x weeks per year.
How much does that add up to?
How much do you value your time? Hybrid schedule and ~10 min commute is very cozy. At the new job, you'll be commuting a ton, waking up earlier and getting home later. How will your evenings look? Your mornings? Do you have less time for yourself? Is it worth the raise if you can't enjoy your time?
Just some things to consider.

I got a job in DC with a 3 hour total commute time. I wanted to kill myself but I got great experience. I was in my mid twenties so it was hustle time. If I had a family, time with them trumps everything. You never get to see your kids grow up twice.

Sounds like a bad idea. Wasting a good chunk of your day in a commute isn't worth 15k. Not to me at least.

45 each way isn't horrible. You get used to it and just zone out. Maybe invest in audio books or something, thats what I did. However, I will never set foot in an office again, I took a pay cut to work remotely (pre covid) and now since it became a norm, I make more than I did ever working in an office.

15k isn't worth that shit. not only you will waste away your life commuting, it will make you more tired for no reason as well everyday. the only reason you could accept is if you can double that money in a year and triple it in 2 years

Yeah that's my problem is that I already have a wife and kids but terrible job experience and I make shit pay. I value my time with them tremendously and would be sacrificing a lot of time seeing them if I took this job.

>>50711405
I was full time remote at the height of the pandemic, but my Semitic bosses brought me back in 2-3 days per week.

>>50713634
I have heavily considered this, though any house I buy or rent will be much more than what we're paying now - potentially negating any raise I might get.

Ultimately, I'd lose about an hour's worth of sleep every day, since I'd have to wake up early enough for the commute, and I wouldn't be able to drive home during my hour breaks to see the family. Would this be worth it even if it was a 25k raise?

>> No.50716004

>>50709545
I bet you could leverage the new position for maybe 5-10k raise if you told your employer you like the culture there blah blah blah but with a wife and kids you feel like you need the extra breathing room this position would provide

15k a year is like 1 extra thousand per month, it's not worth it, you are gonna end up wasting more than half of that in gas and food.

What happens if I leverage this new position to try and get a raise at my current job and the current job just tells me "no"? I still don't think I want this new job, so I'd hate for my current job to call my bluff and then I just keep working there. They'd probably see that as me actively looking for a new job and maybe look for a reason to can me.

>>50716082
Thanks, anon. That really solidified my decision. The only thing I'm.worried about is stagnating at my current employer and never learning anything new. I have a follow up meeting today and I think I'm going to push for 10k over what we initially agreed upon. Maybe a 25k raise would be worth the commute/potential relocation.

Consider you are working an additional hour every day for no pay, plus gas due to bidinflation and wear+tear on your car. And that money will be taxed so it's probably closer to only +11k. Is it really worth it? I'd say no, honestly. But see if the new company will take you wfh.

I pay 620/ month for a 2 bedroom house. We were given a good deal since our landlords are family friends. If I relocate there's no way I'd get a similar deal, and the increase in rent/mortgage would eat into the potential salary increase. Although I have considered this.

I just skimmed this thread so might be wrong but how the FUCK all of the niggers in this 100% african american thread (before I entered) seem to be giving advice before asking the most crucial question: "what the actual heck is your current income?"
If you currently earn 1k then it's worth it, if you earn 1mil then no. As it is it's literally fucking impossible to give you any valuable advice.
I wanna insult you but you put best girl in the OP so I will stop myself.

>> No.50722260

>>50709545
FUCK no.

In fact, you should quit your job asap and find one that is WFH even if the pay is 15k less.

Doing some quick math, 15k comes out to $288.46 per week, assuming you're working 5 days a week, 3hr commute time a day, that is equivalent to putting in an extra 15hrs a week at $19.23 an hour.

That's not worth your time or if it is anywhere near your hourly wage you're ngmi either way lmao

>> No.50722376

>>50722260
This isn't even accounting for gas btw, say it's a 60mi commute, 120mi/day and you get 30mpg and are in a non commie state where gas is $4; that's $4160 out of the 15k, now you're earning $13.90/hr during your commute

And that's still not accounting for the mileage on your car

>figure out your hourly rate
>figure out your new total expected work + commute time (eg 40 hour week + 1.5 hours each day commuting = 47.5 hour week)
> figure out your new implied hourly rate.
> decide if the extra 7.5 hours spent commuting is worth 15K over the year; alternatively 15K is about an extra $570 before taxes every 2 weeks.
> would you work an extra hour and a half each day to earn an extra ~$350 over 2 weeks?
> I would not personally but if you only make like 60K it might be worth it

I make 40k in a fly over state doing some tier 1 help desk support. I just spoke with the hiring agency today and told them it wouldn't be worth it unless they bumped up the pay to 65k, which they agreed on. It ultimately depends on the company whether they accept that pay with my experience/qualifications - but assuming they DO, that would be a 25k raise for me, which I feel like is pretty big even if I have to commute. I've also considered relocating since I'm still a rent cuck. What do you think bros

assuming you probably spend 20-25k on unavoidable necessities (rent+food+utilities+subscriptions etc.) you'll basically more than double your disposable income. So yeah, I'd say it's worth it for sure, especially since you're at a dead end position currently. You can look into pushing for remote work or shortening the commute to make the change into more of a no-brainer.

Thanks bro. I'm still a little torn since I lot of the sentiment here is basically, "commuting is never worth it".. Which I entirely understand. I had to deal with a 2 hr. Commute daily for a job once and I remember being so burned out at the end of the day just from the drive alone. The recruiting agency marketed the job as being "hybrid" work but they have financial incentive to get me hired, so I'm suspicious that it's just a ploy. I'm supposed to speak with HR of the actual company and they'll be able to expand on how "remote" the position actually is. I wish my current company would actually pay me a livable wage since it's such a comfy job.

in the end you basically have to decide if adding 30h on top of your standard 160h for >200% disposable income buff is worth it.
You can cope with the long commute in some ways - if public transport is an option you can read on the bus or something, or you can bike part of the way to get in shape etc.

Thanks for the advice frend. I have to also consider that I've been in my current role for a few years, and I really need to look at advancing my career in a new / challenging role. It's in the next town over so I'll be driving the whole way unless we decide to relocate. This salary may also enable me to finally apply for a mortgage for a decent house in the area.
