I disagree about them being our downfall, we still have one of the largest gdps in the world. We should have never touched slaves like we did though, slavery is a cancer on any country who allows it. The french philosopher/writer Tocqueville was shocked at how backwards americans were when he visited in the early 1800s. He couldn't understand how such a prosperous liberal country still allowed slaves. It made white men lazy and ruined the south.
