While not actually that complicated, I used a system so I wouldn’t have to manually check them all for the top 3 prizes. Across all tickets I only used about half the numbers, I only used 5 different mega balls, etc.

Generally I think the calculated number is something like 20 cents, so yeah, poor investment. When these jackpots get this big though, the EV obviously goes way up, even with the possibility of splitting the jackpot multiple ways. I didn't look at this current one but there's been multiple times where mega millions tickets have been proven to be +EV (worth just over $2). With this current jackpot it's at least close, so you can't really fault OP for putting $12k into $11k-13k of EV. Beyond just the numbers, you may want to have an extra consideration for the jackpot upside's effect on your life (which is really in the general math for any of these jackpot games, else nobody would pay $2 for .20 cents of value).
