Joining an organization like the Freemasons is good for making connections, even though they say that they don't permit it. However, they are some shady fuckers. In blue lodges (lower ranks) you probably won't see much action. In red lodges (Scottish Rite) they go from ranks 3-33. Those are the ones that really have good connections. You might lose your soul in the process though.

I'm in a fraternal organization. It isn't the masons, but some of the guys there are masons as well. A lot of the guys in it are union and work pretty comfy jobs. They've offered to get me in if I decide I like the line of work. From what I've seen, the rich people join these groups for comradery. They'll use connections if they're offered, but they don't push hard to make deals during the get togethers.
