The year is 2051. I live in paratime housing unit #3857399 along with 1,024 other residents. I walk to the fountain, a towering monument to Dawn Song's striking visage.

Provided our service is satisfactory and a worker doesn’t cause any waves, staff are generally allowed by our Oasis ambassadors to retire after 65 cycles. If a worker starts their service period on their 18th birthday such as I did, this often puts them at 83 years old, plus any days off of course. A bad performance review, leaving too early or coming in too late, taking too many bathroom breaks or just simply not being happy enough (“not believing in the mission” they call it) can result in additional cycles added to one’s service period. It’s often devastating. The man walks off defeated and in tears. Another cycle will be added if he can’t find his card again tomorrow.

I pull out my keycard and insert it into the door. A transaction fee of 0.01 Rose is deducted to process the interaction with my manager. I grimace at the damage to my wallet but quickly erase the thought from my head. It’s time to meet with my supervisor, the Zuckerbot.

The Zuckerbot is the ultimate product of a long-ago partnership between Oasis and Facebook. It tracks one’s work performance and social media presence to determine if their social credit score and work performance are at the standards of the ambassadors and if one is successfully adhering to the mission. I try my best to smile despite my fear of additional cycles as I walk in to convince the Zuckerbot that the dopamine sensor had malfunctioned, to avoid additional cycles.
