Sorry about that, I was gone for a while. Mainly I look for areas with thin volume in them, as that indicates that none of the market participants thought prices in that range made sense. That's where I'd stick a buy order (near the bottom) or a sell stop (near the top). I use the different time frames to figure out where the momentum would likely go based on short/long term holdings. You wanna buy into where the previous longs will support your price, otherwise they'll dump on you if they need to bail out.
Regarding value area: anything way above value area with thin volume is likely not going to stick. This goes for under/over. This is where the multiple time frames come in as what may seem overextended on a shorter time frame may be a normal range on the longer.
Point of control I am still figuring out how to interpret. The classic is high -> bull, low -> bear, but nothing is ever that easy.

The way I see it is if there is a divergence between IV and HV, that means the option is over/underpriced, with premia increasing on ITM options that get deeper and deeper, thus higher IV.
But if a stock has like 60% HV and ATM options are showing 180% IV, that means it's inflated due to recent volatility. The part that confuses me is that the long-dated spread should have higher vega (due to more time for expiry / time for volatility to kick in). But I guess the better way to view is that I'm not trading the volatility per se, but rather the *change* in volatility.

Like here's a spread I constructed just now. What I would do is long something with 60 dte, and short something with 90 dte. For example, ISEE fits this criteria - the 5.00 puts on Sept 16 (245% IV) had a decent number of Vol>OI, so I looked into it further.

ISEE has a 90% IV percentile, but a current IV rank of 46%, which means it seems to be declining (the peak was actually 280% IV in Sept last year), and currently has an HV of 66%. But this means that a 245% IV is not justified.

So if I open a spread like picrel, I'm mostly gamma neutral, with a short position on vega. If I go delta neutral, then the P&L curve gets pushed into the higher prices (away from 1-2 SDs on the probability curve), so I opted to have a negative delta to get it within this SD range on the curve. This spread has an average IV of 253%, but if it drops by 60%, then it becomes quite profitable — but if the IV drop doesn't happen, then it's a losing position.

Since it's a 60/90 dte spread, I'd probably keep it for 30 days then exit. Of course, since I'm not entirely sure of what I'm doing, I'll just paper trade it and see how close I get.

The 1 and 10 day comparisons show a likely pull back, but I don't think it happens until we crab in the 410 range for a while. Of course, this GDP print is likely to throw a wrench in things. Pic attached are the same charts backed up to June 15 when last FOMC was. Things looked way worse with a lot of chunky bars above the price, ultimately causing lots of share dumping.

Probably better to just do long calls or synthetic futures, but this seems like a very safe play as well.
Basically we sell ATM short-dated straddles and go long on ATM long-dated straddles to have positive vega for incoming IV spikes. Gamma is long too, because it'll probably have a sharp spike up at some point in the future, but shorting a handful of shares to hedge against slight downside movement.
Basically as long as SIGA doesn't crab in the next 30 days, this spread should make some good money

But no, I'm just a fan of options since you can play them in so many different ways. I'm still learning how to construct trades better. With news of mpox being a grave health emergency and money flowing into them, it seems like a no brainer to profit off of increased volatility. The position is basically neutral too, it literally just needs IV to increase, which is very likely. SIGA has an HV of 128% and the options are just barely above that, so it's basically trading at their historical levels ... but the macro is changing
