MEW IS a safe wallet. Both Trezor and Ledger use MEW to store ERC20. It's not an exchange like Mt. Gox. You aren't storing your coins on their website.

MEW is just a convenient way to grab an address from the ETH blockchain. You don't even need to be online when you do it. You can open the page, disconnect your internet, create the wallet, and then burn your computer. As long as you have the private key your funds are safe.

The golden rule is: If you have possession of your private keys you are OK. If you are letting someone else hold your coins (Mt. Gox) without knowing the private key, you are risking your funds.
