Looking at the 5 year chart for oil it seems like it really could keep coming down pretty hard. Why not do it for stocks that you're net bullish on for extra yield? Also, puts usually have extra premium due to volatility skew. They also form the backbone of other strategies, such as condors, and can be used for eg put calendar spreads (whether bull or bearish), or long synth futures, etc.

Also what's funny is that selling OTM puts is technically the worst thing for market makers to hedge against. Hypothetically, if you sold like millions of OTM puts against SPY, you could actually crash the market since all the flow would get fucked from the hedging, and force the share price down.

Calls on top of 3X ETFs has a very high risk, and they have lower options liquidity. You're better off buying calls on QQQ instead if you want the leverage. Pic related is from a paper called "leverage for the long run." Basically you buy UPRO (3x SP 500) when the SP 500 is above the 200 MA. And sell when it crosses below. It averaged 26% returns (top row, far right in pic). Compared to 16% returns with a buy and hold strategy. You also never have to worry about liquidation. You could swap out UPRO for TQQQ if that's your preference. Tech performs well in bull markets and the returns could be higher. But as for a buy and hold strategy you're probably better off with QLD or SSO.

Options have 3 inputs to determine their fair market value: strike price, expiry date, and implied volatility (IV). Basically it's what the price "should" be, according to Black-Scholes. If the price goes up, then that means liquidity is down and IV is up.
Based on those inputs, you can also calculate the greek values, like delta, theta, gamma, vega that describe how the FMV of that contract changes over time. Assuming there were actual takers at those prices, it would mean that I benefit from theta decay, benefit from volatility, and remain neutral to price movements.
