If your dapp really gets big, and I'm talking propper big then you will likely need multiple L2s or further types of sharding. Next point is that with L2, you need to settle, i.e. bid for blockspace one the L1, this gets expensive if you have lots of L2s trying to do the same. ETH tried to handle this by increasing blocksize (this is what they mean with sharding, basically it will never shard, ever, this is straight from the EF) Doesn't that sound scary. Yes, same problem everywhere else. In kadena this works because you pay the cost of not balancing correctly, so there is a damn good incentive to do so.
