It's a low class career vs what my friends pursued. I went to a top 10 university, so my perspective is skewed that way. comp sci was largely for trannies, gay autists, and poor/middle class kids. Then you get into industry and it's that + a billion pajeets and changs.

It sucks, in part, because of >>50464965
>The one that allowed me to make 6 figures as a 20 yr old with almost no experience or degree
I appreciated that the career had no barriers/no class protection before I was in it. Now I wish it had a little more protection.

A friend, and very good engineer, I encountered put it very well. "If you get to do what you want, you don't do software engineerng".

well yeah because they lie to clients on productions stories and expect you to fix their mistakes by doing extra work alot of the time. They also get mad that they may spec something out with an inexperienced dev or one thats not working on the story down the road and have to go back and alter it. Business Team, Design Team and Dev Team are just the best trinity of enemies because theyre all at each others throats for making sure the blame isnt on them whe something gets fucked due to lack of oversight or design.

The best way to get over this issue is not working at a giant corporation and having a smaller team that interacts with one another and also being personable with other Teams so they know youre not just another blank face pic on a slack convo.

tl;dr- I too hate business team but the best solutions is to be personable and make friends throughout the company and you wont feel alienated and hated

then we invented agile software development to track performance and have some tangible metrics.
part of me thinks the medical industry would benefit from a performance based model.
departments want you to write OKRs, why not doctors have objective results?

I interviewed for a software manager position recently, a product owner got annoyed with me because he asked how I conduct code reviews.
my answer, it's just to catch bugs, and if there are no bugs, I make up to 3 suggestions, which are really just that, suggestions, make the change or don't, I don't care, you're an adult, I trust you'll make a reasonable decision whether to incorporate or don't incorporate my suggestions on your minor feature.

That's a good starter list. You're correct that the list is going to be small

The simple test is to look at what rich kids that go to top universities mostly do. If you go to harvard, yale, princeton, etc and become a software engineer...something went wrong. Even the Stanford kids mostly want to OWN the startup, get funding, and tell you what to build. They don't want to work the project.

Yep. Also, you don't need as high of a minimum IQ to succeed in those, which is a good thing. It's more nepotistic and class protected, so even if you have a 110IQ kid, they can follow your legacy. Tech is more of a pro sport where it's 95% skills and 5% who you know. Tons of short term skill learning and relearning. Little enduring value

A 200k/year engineer isn't even a rare thing.

Any incel can leetcode into FAGMAN or a fintech startup. Why are there so many roles all the time for individual contributor SWE? People find the work repulsive, even if given all the time in the world to complete it, with whatever tools they want, any snacks they want, amazing compensation, etc.

I think it might end up to that when the industry matures; but it might need to reach a point that mostly maintenance and very big projects are done; now it may still be 'the wild west'.

It's like how up to the ~19th century: everyone could be a house builder; there were a few famous architects but that was the exception; most normies could just build whatever.

But now: you must have a structural engineering degree for most important jobs; nobody should trust random normies to build a school; it may literally collapse.

It is true that any retard can do a coding bootcamp, get a job in tech and call themselves a "software engineers", the truth is that 95%+ of them are nothing more than monkeys with typewriters, basically the equivalent of being a factory worker assembling things from pre-made components. The money is decent (in comparison to other professions) but those people are highly replaceable and there is no job satisfaction.

When you meet software engineers that actually know shit about computer science and work on complex pieces of work, you'll see that, even though it's much harder work and there are moments of high stress, they enjoy their work and have high life satisfaction. Plus if you've been in a company for long enough and know the codebase you can get away with fucking around - my current salary is quite low in comparison to what I could earn, but I get away with working less than 8 hours a week.

What would be a basic level of giving a shit in engineering would dominate teaching, in my opinion
At least in my midwestern public school, only a handful of teachers stood out as committed and engaging.
Average would at least be benevolent, albeit very plain.

In any case, it's clear to me that teachers have very little performance management or what is there is just a theater.

Most engineers are complete faggots and I hate working with them. They are always trying to poke at me with snide comments about what I do at work or what my politics might be outside of the office. Mechanical engineers are similar but less faggy and more inflated ego vs their actual value

This is part of why the chart is dumb
"government" isn't a job. it's a sector.

Congressman is government
Landscaping the capitol lawn is also government (ok maybe it's contract, but you get the point)

The chasm between these two is so wide that the term lacks any useful specificity

I thought mechanical engineering would be coming up with new ideas for cool contraptions to solve problems. Instead, I spend most of my time describing known things in great detail on technical documentation, only for the documents to be filed away and never viewed again.

(Computer) Engineering is fucking great, no clue what others have to complain about. Maybe SW Engies in SV are surround by H1Bs but it's the white man's field in the midwest.

I'm guessing women like engineers less because they tend to be antisocial uncharismatic types, but engineers who learn people skills are unironically god tier and can do whatever they want.
