Indexes can be traded will fairly consistent success using basic momentum and volume indicators most of the time. In chop like this it gets tricky and at that point you have to rely on experience about whether it's better to participate or sit it out until a clearer trend forms. Hi anons, just want quick a quick opinion on ETF's here.
In our country we have a stupid law that every 8 years from the date of purchase you have to pay 41% tax on gains regardless if you cash out or keep holding it which greatly reduces the compounding effect.
Is it still worth investing in ETF's regardless with this rule?

Yeah our country kinda sucks for making any money unless you have tons of money. The only way you can really make decent passive money is through pensions here, but the downside is that you have to wait till your 65 to cash out.
I'm kind of considering to just bite the 41% tax but still not entirely sure about it
>>50451638
Ireland
>>50451648
Not entirely sure, it's hard enough to find information investing here as it is. Regardless the moment you sell, you owe 41% on all gains

>> No.50451732

>>50451519
Rule of 72 says it takes approximately 7 years to double your investment at 10% yearly yield (roughly spy's return), so your gains would be approximately 110% in that time frame, you'd be taxed out of +45% of that +110% net return, leaving you at +65% net over 8 years. If you can find another instrument yielding more than that, it's better given your tax law. It's the equivalent of an 8% fixed principal return (64% over 8 years).

Or do as >>50451648 says and sell at 7 years if your gains would be taxed at a lower rate and reinvest a month later.

Specific plays and sectors (UVXY, SOXL, even TQQQ) can definitely burn your ass if you go all in via LETFs and do nothing else.

But if you're dollar cost averaging, think "yeah, SPY might plunge 50% over a bad year but will end up higher in a decade or two", and are actually a buy-and-hold investor, then a simple, conservative portfolio of 100% SPXL outperforms.

The basis was founded in assumptions that no longer apply post lockdowns. The labor market has been in an abnormal state leading up to now so companies are just reducing job openings for positions that they were unlikely to fill anyway. So it's essentially just a technical recession or more accurately stagflation but without mass layoffs and consumer spending declining only slightly. Market slowly realizing that selloff was largely FUD driven and will recover once FED pivots to neutral in September.

8% tax difference is pretty big, price of convenience it seems. Ireland's bonds are yielding <2% so that's pretty trash. But you'd still get more on average with a spy index fund even after tax. I personally would wait for a macro bottom. Holding my longs but not buying until a fed pivot signal.

>>50452123
Be wary of the Leveraged funds for long term. Entry is key. They can take multiple years to break even if you buy near the top. You'd still pay the 41% tax, but it's more a risk/reward thing. Leveraged can go to 0 and get discontinued with sustained dumping, and crabbing is their friend either.

This is bad advice. Anyone that DCAs is just doing it for the psychological effect it has on seeing your negative return appear less disastrous. The only way DCA works is when you are searching for an entry point before a large move. It's smart to only enter the position 20% at a time in case the equity still has room to move before the reversal. I use it to open my options contracts after a big swing

I picked up a few long term calls a few days ago. I think in the midterm they're gonna have a nice run. The streaming landscape is fucked but Netflix still is firmly in first place and nobody else is even threatening. >> No.50452569

>>50452440
Some have strong returns, out performing most index funds returns, for mid term plays. In theory any fund or stock is at 1x leverage. The volatility decay can actually work in ones favor during a bull market, for example, when the market is frequently positive with strong returns. Honestly, I think the market environment is probably the most important factor if holding letfs for a longer period- this environment is ruled by wild upside and downside volatility swings, and so, you probably won't see too much positive decay. That said I think this environment lends itself to short term plays, but I just disagree that there aren't economic environments where they can turn into mid term plays.
