50337263 No.50337263 [Reply] [Original]

This is my dream. I want to make it in crypto and have enough money to have a backup house somewhere maybe in northern Canada with:
>tons of solar panels that tilt to the direction of the sun, around 30-40 panels
>4-5 massive batteries like the Tesla ones or similar to store the energy
>installing geothermal for energy
>house near a stream so that I can install a pump generator that connects to my batteries
>enough space for me and my family
>garden to grow food food and weed
>computer with a VR headset to 'travel' if I want (if I decide on internet access)
>an EV (potentially with the wifi chip taken out so that no one can remotely control my car)
>gun for hunting
>enough money to pay goy taxes and some food (meat from a butcher, etc)

Is this a viable solution to the bullshit that's happening all over the world now? I'm really worried about my and my family's future.
I also already bought a house with my crypto gains so I know I can make more and it's not just a total pipe dream.

especially in the north you have very cheap houses and loads of room, fantastic nature and clean water. only cons is that you might get lonely after the heavens do not fall within a few years
personally i prefer the island life, only downside is that the russians might try something

Anon, this will take like 500k, maybe more depending on how much land you want. The idea of creating a self sustaining smallholding in the modern era doesn't really work, unless you are willing to dispense with most modern conveniences and inevitably making your kids totally unprepared for the normie world.

There is not really much money, not much culture, not many other smart people. Like yeah you can sit and browse 4chan and say "well when the world goes to shit, at least I have my 6.5 acres!".

But it isn't enough. And it definitely isn't enough in Northern Canada where you can't grow most crops. Just do what other people who fear the inevitable slide of the Western World to the Third World: move to a comfy exurb, drive everywhere, etc.

Looks like you get 7 hours of sunlight, but if you're in a wooded area that would equate to about 4 hours of direct solar per day during the winter. I'm in New England so not even that far north - I have a small 60w camping solar panel that I use to charge my phone and small electronics, but it won't pull more than 4 watts during the winter even if I put it out in the snow. I get a max of 48w (80% efficiency) even in direct sunlight during the summer here while in Colorado or Florida I can get 55+

If you want to do this for cheap I would say your best chance is going to be rural southwest Saskatchewan, but be prepared for hard winters. Everywhere else in Canada is going to be expensive (anywhere BC), even worse climate, far too populated, or have more problems with rural natives (Manitoba, Ontario, etc). Saskatchewan also gets the most sunlight of anywhere in Canada because of relative low precipitation.

If you wanted to go into the north you can do northern BC or even the Yukon close to the coast. The winters are milder there than in north-central or north-east Canada (and actually milder than most of Saskatchewan/Manitoba), but don't expect to rely much on gardening.

If you're going more than 100km north of the US border you should probably give up the idea of ever using solar power for anything other than handheld electronics. Solar efficient drops significant as you move away from the equator and there isn't anything you can do about it other than spend infinite money. Southwest Alberta has huge wind that I wouldn't want to live in, but it is a region used for windmill power. Saskatchewan is annoyingly windy but generally not enough for wind power.

>QRD of what your day to day life is like?
That's a very broad question. I wake up and survey the projects first, just checking the plants, animals and systems to look for any issues. It's honestly wonderful, I love walking around and enjoying it with my tea, unless I find something bad like the Japanese beetles this morning. We have most of the property automated in rudimentary ways; you really don't want to get stuck watering and feeding day after day, don't let this stuff eat up your life. The only daily task is milking the sheep because that's critical but we cycle that responsibility around the family so I only have to do it once a week and it doesn't take long anyway.
On most days I'm free to do what I want because the water lines from the creek and the grandpa feeders with gravity tanks for what they need to do. Sometimes I let the sheep into the other yard for fresh grass but that's not really a task since they love the change and just run in there.

However, sometimes you have a special task you need to throw in that can take several hours. Canning, preserving, gathering and drying chicken poop for fertilizer, gathering wood or taking care of some specific issue, but I'd say about 6 out of 10 days I can work on something other than the homestead.

>How much money did you spend on everything?
Hard to say since I gathered and learned this stuff over a very long time. Not as much as you'd think because I'm willing to build things myself. My greenhouses are nothing but plastic sheeting on the frame and I grow in the cheapest containers and (almost) cheapest soil I could buy, which works great by the way, just some $5 totes from your local supermarket can work wonders as containers. Besides the land and the house I'd say we've spent maybe $15k on the whole thing but that's including the hydroelectric and the dam.

>> No.50341581

>>50339918
>How far out are you from civilization?
About 45 minutes highway. That's one of the worst parts though, maybe the only bad part. If someone starts having a medical emergency the nearest hospital probably isn't close enough.

>What is your monthly cost for supplies/taxes?
Our cost for luxuries can be high like anyone but I can run this thing by itself without outside resources as of now if I have to and I try to with a lot of things. Our chickens eat a lot of pumpkin for example because pumpkin grows like crazy year after year. It's hard to even do anything with 100 pumpkins a year. I grow enough food for us and the animals, the creek pumps the electricity, and it plus the well and rain provide the water. If I wanted to disappear and never leave the property again I could at least until the unexpected starts arriving.

I am in a little trouble with taxes so I probably shouldn't answer that

>> No.50341731

>>50339918
>Are you completely off grid?
No we get running water and power but never use them anymore. The microdam pumps ~200 amps and that's more than we need. I have the toilet on the water tower that the creek feeds and the sink on the rainwater. And the one beehive makes more honey than you can eat so I mean hell I don't even need to leave for treats.

Do you use any electronics?
Oh yeah I actually have a gaming computer and all the modern stuff. It isn't such a bad influence to kids when they also have good values from the farm. I've got both the rural side and the modern side I guess.

Do you have pets or kids?
If you count the producing animals then we have tons of pets but I am careful to never name them or call them that. The chickens are there to be pampered their whole life and then killed and eaten and I really try not to forget it. Other than that I like cats but I do have one dog I love. And she barks to alert us of visitors / intruders.
Kids I have five, so it's me and her and one kid for every day of the week

If so, how do you teach them social skills?
We decided to homeschool and worried about that but our church community is great and when there are less people the people go farther to meet. Our kids have a lot of friends thankfully. The boys more so around here and the girls more in town

>> No.50341823

Regarding the energy discussion, seriously look into hydroelectric if you have a creek or water source. Build a simple dam with a short drop in the creek to let gravity do the work and your water wheel will pump out probably more power than you need. I put the solar panels away.
