While my current employer offers a 401k plan, they don't do any matching and the investment options available are basically all S&P tracking dogshit. For the 3 anons here that have real jobs and presumably want to get to the point where you can live off the divies of your portfolio, have you found an IRA or a brokerage to be the better option? I'm not paid well enough to hit the 6k annual cap on IRA contributions without cutting into my other expenses, so the IRA has that going for it, but I'm also virtually guaranteed to retire in a much higher tax bracket than I'm in now, so a roth sounds rather nice.

even if your employer doesn't match, the 401k contributions are pre-tax. that lowers your taxable income for the year. that's good, you want that.
