Why does a split divided cause the price to go up?

Because two people are expecting to get the same three shares. Broker lends John's shares to Shorty (for a fee) who sells to Holder. Holder has the stock in possession, they get three shares, now totaling four shares.

Broker is expecting their four shares when shorty closes. Because those shares belong to John. John gets a dividend share, he is the owner, they just lent out his share. But Shorty already sold the shares they borrowed. Shorty didn't get three shares. Shorty has 0 shares.

John wants to DRS now and so Broker needs their shares back. Shorty goes to market to buy the share back. Holder won't sell. Price goes up.

I think the major thing to remember is the brokerage is lending someone else's shares, not their shares. Usually without their knowledge. So when John wants his shares back, they need to deliver his shares to him -- and if there isn't a share to give him because they lent them all out...Fractional Reserve Brokerages "bank" run?

This isn't even adding in naked shorting, or bankruptcies, or swaps.

Is Broker gonna tell John that he lost his shares because they lent them out to a hedge fund that shorted them and then that went bankrupt?

Now the person who bought that share is marked as having that share in their account. So now anon2 and anon1 both think they own the same share....and if that same share gets loaned out again...now anon 3, anon 2 and anon 1 all think they own the same share.

So it comes down to the brokers putting their heads in the sand and pretending they don't know what happens with loaned out shares.

Cause their is really only two reasons to borrow a share -- either you wanna short sell it, or you already owe someone that share and wanna pretend you have it.

Okay? I don't think you've really thought this through. For 99% of retail, owning shares is literally just having a broker tell you that you own a share and comparing how much it's worth by checking the stock ticker. No one asks for their literal share because this is basically impossible.
One of the ways that it's theorised that hedgies/brokers are playing retail is by internalising all orders and then betting against them.
So you buy 20 shares, your broker says sure and doesn't actually buy the shares but says that they're in your account. Then your broker shorts the stock and the price falls. cross billions of orders, on average, retail then sells in this situation. The broker doesn't need to actually sell anything since they never bought the share, so they just refund you a portion of how much you spent and pocket the rest.
If the stock goes up, the broker loses a bit of money.
But you never *get* your share one way or the other unless you bother to drs it. But who can be fucked to do that?
By the way, this is a 'feature' only of the US stock market. Anything even kind of implying this is heavily illegal pretty much everywhere else on the planet. Naked shorting literally only happens on a wide scale in the US because of the clusterfuck of having multiple exchanges in the same country.
