Because two people are expecting to get the same three shares. Broker lends John's shares to Shorty (for a fee) who sells to Holder. Holder has the stock in possession, they get three shares, now totaling four shares.

Broker is expecting their four shares when shorty closes. Because those shares belong to John. John gets a dividend share, he is the owner, they just lent out his share. But Shorty already sold the shares they borrowed. Shorty didn't get three shares. Shorty has 0 shares.

John wants to DRS now and so Broker needs their shares back. Shorty goes to market to buy the share back. Holder won't sell. Price goes up.

I think the major thing to remember is the brokerage is lending someone else's shares, not their shares. Usually without their knowledge. So when John wants his shares back, they need to deliver his shares to him -- and if there isn't a share to give him because they lent them all out...Fractional Reserve Brokerages "bank" run?

This isn't even adding in naked shorting, or bankruptcies, or swaps.

If the broker that treats the sales is NOT a GME short seller, they just won't care and treat it anyway. They won't have server issues because even Computershare is aware of the MOASS, so obviously they'll want their brokers to be prepared for it too.
