That's one side of the equation yeah, but really the game is to make sure that stop coincides with some plausible market reality and then see if there's some plausible upside that actually makes it worth it. From there, you can even use Kelly criterion to make sure you're not overbetting, but the main mistake I see is people who just think "look at all that upside I could get" without looking at the potential downside like it's a cost that must be controlled as a top priority.
