Are server farms a good side hustle?
How easy / hard are they to set up?
Anyone with experience here?

Are there any platforms / services where you could just connect your servers to and be online and get clients immediately?
If not, could that be a good idea for a start-up?

Also, how do generic server farms compare to crypto mining?
Hashrates are down now and GPUs are being dumped for cheap.

Compared to generic crypto mining you need a lot of bandwidth. You'll need a commercial fiber line for more than a few computers. You also need to configure the systems differently depending on workload, since you'll need full x16 PCIE lanes per GPU. So multi-GPU setups will generally require server motherboards and processors once you get past a couple GPUs.

Depending on workload, Nvidia may be favored over AMD. Most of the distributed HPC rental places I see are preferential or only allow Nvidia GPUs.

On top of this you'll need more CPU cores, RAM and SSD space than for crypto mining. You're basically setting things up completely differently and it'll cost a lot more than a generic crypto mining setup.

Just buy in $RIOT for 3-4$/share-- they own real estate and their business model is btc mining and, (i think) eth too.

There's other similar sites that let you rent/lease hardware.

wow! thanks for the detailed response.
I did expect that generic server farms would cost more initially, but maybe in the long run, they'll be more profitable? sincepeople will always need servers for whatever whereas crypto depends on an extremely volatile market.

I also wonder if server farms can be scaled as easily as crypto.
I could connect my laptop to a mining pool and get some. it won't be much, but it's a start and I can scale it up as much as I want.
with servers, I don't know if you can start with a small setup or if you need a large operation from the beginning to even get trafic.

>>50209110
so you get profits from their mining depending on shares?
what % do they keep?

With these rental sites you can start with 1 computer or many. Scaling up has its problems because you need to scale electricity, cooling, internet, floorspace, etc. along with it. With crypto mining you don't really need to worry much about scaling up internet so your costs are less. Also, profits with crypto mining are higher than what I've seen on these rental marketplaces. AWS/Azure make more money renting our their hardware than they'd get from crypto mining but these places charge like 1/10th of AWS and you only get a portion of that.

If crypto crashes further then these services might become more profitable, but I think it's just as likely that the excess flood of GPUs will lower the value of your computing power.

I've bought old HPC server chassis for <$1k and used them for mining because it gives me remote management (IPMI) in case a hard reboot is needed or something, and it makes directing airflow much easier. A side benefit to this is that the obsolete xeons and stuff still meet minimum requirements for a lot of these HPC sites so I've thought of doing this if crypto goes bust. But the bandwidth requirements are steep, and even if I had fiber here I'd only be able to host a fraction of my GPUs before maxing out my connection.

Those work but $20/rig is expensive when a PDU does the same thing for 20 outlets.

The remote management on servers is a little more advanced. You have a second on-board CPU that lets you flash a motherboard BIOS, see the display output, etc. even if the primary computer is having issues (RAM stick failed and is preventing a boot, hard disk corrupted, power supply failure, etc.) Most of this you don't really need for mining but it's nice to have, especially if the cost is the same as consumer parts. I pay $700 for a 12 GPU chassis which includes motherboards, fans, redundant 1600W x4 power supplies, basically everything needed minus the $4 CPUs and $10 in RAM.

You are obviously not aware or ignorant that there amny tiers of datacenters. However, it is feasable for one to start up.

In less degenerate countries and in hotspots like big cities, vacation resort towns, richfag gated communities, etc.
Occasionally you can find like a unspoiled young woman of highest quality in random eastern European village but you got to find them before they get spoiled.
Essentially if its too expensive for you to live there thats wete the concentration will be highest.

I know many extremely hot women that relocated from my city and country.
Two are in Miami, some are in Dubai and Emirates, some in Chinese mega cities like Shenzhen, a few in Vienna Austria... I can go on listing but you get the jyst of it.
And these are the ones I personally know and consider to be above 7.5/10.
Like the Emirates stewardess girl is an easy 9/10.
>inb4 anecdotal evidence
It is part of a bigger picture confirmed by hundreds of men of all ages that have experience and data from the above listed cities, resorts and hot spots.
When you add fashion industry, acting and dancing scouts and agencies, official escort and prostitute agencies, mega corporation resettlement of employed women its all much worse.
When I was young it was a sporadic girl here and there but many remained in my city. Zoomer cousin and his crew of 19 year old men literally have only the fat and ugly or suick women from their bage group remaining.
Anything above 6/10 moves on for easy opportunity and more money.
And you may think theres plenty of fish in the sea but thats skewed and wrong.
40 something old maid is useless.
30 something are either married or moved on long ago.
50+ fill up the stats but are beyond useless for the market. While men in those groups are active in the market.

That’s a start. Realistically you won’t be able compete directly on privacy or security, but you can be “good enough” in both those areas. As you said, the trick will be to find a business whose needs are a good for for what you can provide, and then court them aggressively. Maybe they have some existing on-site hardware they’re looking to colocate or migrate entirely, etc. Point being that broadening your scope of services from just “server farm” to almost more of a consulting gig might work well for scoring leads.

This is only part of an overall talent drain from rural areas to megacities. "Brain drain" is close to correct but doesn't capture the fact that not just smart people, but also attractive people, charismatic people, and anyone else bound for success in life are increasingly concentrated in a handful of major cities.

You can complain about muh land and rentcucks all you want (and these are legitimate criticisms) but young successful people are overwhelmingly found not just in cities, but in a handful of major influential cities, to the exclusion of almost everywhere else.

You're correct: you need a niche that's more attractive than digital ocean or AWS or heroku or whatever other cloud-based service.

One option I haven't seen anyone pick up yet is environmentally friendly GPU clusters. Lefties are starting to hate on AI just as much as crypto because muh energy, so if you buy "green" power from your local power company, and run your GPU clusters off that, you can charge a premium for a "certified green AI model" or whatever. Maybe even tack on some carbon credits.

Or find some other niche, I dunno. Hosting no-code apps in some special tech stack, whatever.
