It's not a meme, Lehman and Stearns both collapsed and from what I understand there's still people trying to get their SIPC payouts. Imagine if Fidelity collapsed. That's what that event was like. With DRS, every broker and market maker and the DTCC itself could go bust and you'd still have your shares, ready to be tokenized and traded on GameStop's replacement for the stock market.
