This would be the case for a share dividend. "Split via dividend" is just a split. There's no not getting the split shares because if anybody didn't they'd be robbed when the price dropped. The fantasy is that the DTCC will have clean up all of these unbalanced synthetics in order to have enough shares for a split but Trimbath seemed skeptical. Having to invent a crap ton of new shares could potentially make a mess in other good ways though.
