32 year old boomer here.

I got laid off from my job on Thursday, /biz/. Im still getting over the shock of it since its the first time its happened to me in my career. At a job that I started 10 months ago that cut across the board due to declining profits.

$90k in my 401k
$50k in crypto
$15k in stocks
$4k in savings

Ill be getting 2 weeks severence for about $5k then Im on my own/unemployment. My rent is $1900 a month.

What do? I wanna day drink and I have bad anxiety as it is.

This is exactly why I'm staying put in my job for now instead of trying for a bigger salary. Doesn't pay great but it's stable for now.

Can you move back in with your parents? Half of all young american adults do.

I am also 32, I don't have that much saved 50k in 401k, 2k in crypto and 11k in stocks and -100k in a house.
Can you move? Or do you have to stay until the end of the year or something?
That is a lot to pay in rent. My mortage is $600 and I have setup my life so I can easily ride out unemployment once the recession hits and either me or my wife loses our job.
I mean, you could eat out of your crypto for the next two years, but that cash would last you a lot more if you moved into a smaller place.
I would assume if you made 120k you would have more savings than this.

You're allowed one blow out for catharsis, then get back on the train. You have enough saved to weather it.

have 50k cash in various accounts.
No debt.
I haven't looked for a job in 2 years. my pay is ass(48k). I have no 401k.

Don't start drinking man, you can take a week off and do something else. I don't why, it is so easy to say fuck it and be in a self destructive place wallowing in self pity. It is comfortable, even though I feel like shit, it is an excuse to not try.
As far as I know, recession is not full blow yet, you can still find jobs if you looked around. Whatever you do try to stay productive, reach out to family members and friends.

If you can't find another job within 2-3 weeks then you should move out of your city and find a rural place that is more affordable.

sorry to hear anon. obviously just hit the ground running trying to apply for other jobs - jobs that you think you could land. I'm not sure what line of work you are in but I'd keep doing the same sort of shit.

good luck bro. 30 year old here and anticipating layoffs in the next year or so. If it gets really bad i'll probably move back in with my parents but they have a boomer american mindset and never wanted me living with them since i graduated college despite them being rich as shit. Sometimes I wish i get laid off sooner just to get it over with and have a nice long break after working for 8-years straight.

>> No.50169705

31 here. I desperately want to quit my job and take a break, even did the math with my savings and if I live conservatively I have enough for ~2 years. Being laid off would be a fucking dream come true for me.

We are not alone and the crazy amount of turnover throughout all industries prooves it. So many people are leaving left and right and "retiring" without anything lined up which creates staff shortages and more work for those who are still working.

I ended up starting my own business and even though it's not the biggest or most profitable company, I still have my freedom and the ability to make my own destiny.

Why not try to start your own business, and if it doesn't work out, you can find another job.

I moved back in with my parents (moved back to the country and was traveling for work 90% of the time so I didn't need to waste money on rent). I would discourage this unless it's absolutely necessary or unless you're really self-motivated. It will kill your motivation and you'll become a shell.

Contract work like >>50165328 mentioned might not be bad if you can't find another job. You could work a couple contract jobs and probably make about the same (have to pay your own medical, etc. though).

Keep your head up and look into overemployment. You get to choose your own destiny, don’t let capitalists determine it for you. I got laid off a few weeks ago and I teeheed in the inside because I have a whole ass another full time job on the side. Already looking for my second job and will likely land something this month. Fake it till you make it bruh.
