japanese cars are reliable but i generally go with ford since all your parts will be off-the-shelf products at most mechanic places should you ever need a repair. personally still driving a 2012 ford focus i bought for 5k in 2017, its just over 62k miles as of this month. jnsurance $74/month for basic coverage.

you run the equation

>original price and mileage

>expected sale price and mileage after ownership.

>(original price - sale price) / ( mileage after ownership - original miles)

>this is the base price per mile to drive your car.

You can add in maintance and fuel costs too, but that doesn't really matter so much. modern cars are pretty reliable if you keep up with basic maintenance.

>>50159575
you ideally want a toyota or a honda built entirely at their originally japanese plants. you can sniff around online and see what models are wholly made in japan. Anything else is significantly less reliable.

Not sure where that comes from except for the problems with their newer turbo engines putting fuel in the oil under very cold start conditions, like northern winters. But I think that's been fixed for a year or two as well, and you can still get naturally aspirated Hondas. Nothing else tends to break much on them. Nothing serious at least.
I've had a '14 civic since it was new, and I beat the absolute shit out of it. 120k miles, one incident of sliding off the road into trees at 30mph, tons of engine braking down a mountain ridge when I lived on it, a few years of tearing over a lumpy ass dirt road, many instances of plowing the front end through snow which was really too high to be taking a sedan through. Lots and lots of blasting through corners and squealing rubber in this poor, abused thing.
Unusual maintenance costs:
>2 front wheel bearings for being an asshole to them on dirt road bumps.
>Driver mirror, door handle, front left body panel, and gas cover replaced after having a fight with an oak tree.
I have spent more on tires than anything else, and the thing still drives like new. I've been considering trading it for a Mazda CX-5 as I really need to carry more shit around these days than a sedan can handle, or even a hatch can. But I don't want the day to come. It's been so good to me bros.

2015 Focus hatchback owner, bought it brand new for 11k in 2015, can't beat z plan. I love it, and as long as you have driven manual before you'll have no issues with PowerShift. Pissed Ford stopped making it

Modern cars have planned obsolesence, designed to start breaking after the dealer warranty ends.
Old pre 2000 cars run much longer.
Stuff like old toyota trucks can commonly go for 400-500k miles

Instead of buying one used car for $5000 go on craigslist and buy three used cars for $1500 each. Then use rock auto and youtube tutorials to keep them all running yourself. A fleet of junk is more reliable than just having one car that everything depends on.

I made our like a bandit buying out the lease on a 2017 Honda Civic. Was leased before covid hit, buyout price locked in at only $10k, paid about $6k over the course of the lease. Used car prices are so high today that I could easily sell it for $20k. So overall I’m $4k up on a car I’ve driven for 5 years.
