It's affirmative action for the shitty, unemployable fields of study. Make general education classes so you are guaranteed to get a large chunk of students studying something totally different to take some of your classes (and early on in their degree, before they drop out) then start pushing for other degrees to incorporate more of your classes. Since colleges are run by academics, they're going to run the system as favorably to academics as possible.

Computer Science/Maths is based. However, except few niche areas, and few big companies, most business work is boring/brain-dead as fuck. All you need is AWS/Design Patterns/CICD & shit like that. There is no innovation there, it’s all processes & product BS. You don’t design awesome algorithms, run simulations or design ML models in a boring company trying to maintain cashflow in a recession.

It’s all about leverage. If you’ve leverage, go for exciting things (models, ML, bioinformatics, ML/BioTech etc) esp when you are younger. Yes, PhD is useless for avg corporate, but when you seek positions in aforementioned areas, everyone demands a PhD. And you can do that at side, even if takes 6 years. Don’t be a Ruby/Python/ slave.

Exactly, it's scarcer and more valuable as it's a much more rigorous program; there isn't much to the field at the research level as there is for a CS PhD, but the reality is most undergrad CS programs are a code monkey meme degree while SE has the rigour of an engineering curriculum and pays like $30k more on average

>> No.50124549

>>50124465
You know just because it has the word "engineering" in it that doesn't make it rigorous nor even worthy of being called engineering

No. Aerospace Engineering and Material Science / Chemistry are the most important degrees for actually advancing militarily and as a species. They also allow the individual to understand the natural world and enjoy a fun job. I honestly think we're close to the point where the actual internet infrastructure, sufficient for the needs of the public at large, is for the most part built. Outside of bibleo game development and fine tuning the algorithms that companies like Tik Tok use to keep people addicted, I think there's going to be a slow down in development. Just like how highway construction slowed down after the interstate system was completed.

CS PhD here. You can do a Masters to help you get a good job if that's what you want, but PhD is only worthwhile if you have a specific job in mind that you need it for (professor, researcher, etc.). You spend a lot of years making almost nothing being treated like a slave, and then you're likely to spend years in a shitty postdoc position still being paid poorly (I was getting 70k before I quit). Honestly guys, unless you are really talented for coding, you won't make the big bucks in the industry.

You'll be stuck in the equivalent of a dead-end job by working as a junior dev. We're gonna start needing electrical and other kinds of engineers, as if this trend continues, we'll have a lot of people that mainly sit behind the screen all day and no one to keep the infrastructure in check.
