While I will admit I'm not an expert in finance & market manipulation, I do think you should consider this hypothetical situation. Your argument is correct if the IMF has a total monopoly over every nation in the world. Currently it has 190 out of 195 nations & if you consider banks like JP Morgan Chase holding 90% of precious metals through derivatives if can indeed put short selling into a loop to make sure US fiat dollar doesn't crash & everyone losing faith in it.

However, BRICS is now being seen as a competitor to the IMF (located in Washington) which is backed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, South America as well as new comers Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia & Chile. Just those alone is over half of the world's population with Russia, China as well as India's private sector holding massive amounts of gold & that isn't accounting for the gold in the ground.

The point I'm making is that this already rivals the west right now in terms of economic productivity & market outside of the west & that's even without a hard boarder. With how much increasing debt the west is getting in, nations leaving the IMF for BRICS (& thus never paying off their loans), black markets selling western gold to the east as well as current base & rare earths being confined to the BRICS ecosystem & market place, eventually faith in US dollar fiat will collapse. As I already explained, when the western governments try to confiscate people's gold (not just petty collections, I'm also talking about big stacks of gold and possibly silver), the people trapped in these western systems will use black markets to stop this store of wealth being taken from us with BRICS being a safe alternative. If you think about it, Russia, and particularly China will want to have that control. Let me talk plainly with an example. Say you've got 10kg of gold from your big business or movie career. You don't want to move out of the west but don't want your wealth being confiscated from the government. You move it to a BRICS storage bank so the US government can't get it. You then create trade around you using the Yuan through crypto such as day to day food, security and business. There will be people in America who will come to you for a stable form of living. Government could try to pass laws to scare people away from doing this, but if millions of Americans end up doing it and the government has no real resources to force people, well it's over for them and then you can bring your gold holdings back to you. The way you're seeing it is along petty collections of precious metals. Trade after the collapse won't be like that, you will get city states popping up that will act like kingdoms because it is in human nature to build stable societies. The situation will be no different than today's countries with failed currency using the US dollar for trade.

If you're casting anything that would be used like a spoon use Sterling or it will wear. Shot makes it easy to proportion metal ratios.
If you want to melt bars, you can buy Sterling bars and use those for casting. They're generally cheaper.
The melt videos I've seen had people cutting rounds or one ounce bars (and in one case an ASE) likely because they're thinner and easier to cut they also weren't making anything that large.

Your LCS may have some to offload. They were often made by railroad companies and other firms in the midcentury. Apmex carries them, though you might get gold plated in the mix. Golden eagle coin does too but they only sell 100 oz lots.
You can try the various pm exchanges to see if anyone has Sterling to part with. If you're just making a few small melts just get a few ounces. The usual price is around that of generic three nines rounds or perhaps a little less.

Remember that unless specified as Troy the ounces are avoirdupois. $120 melt value for under $80 total, you just populate a bid sniping service (I use www.gixen.com) with stuff like this and let it all ride. Scrap usually sells for less than melt value so if you're getting it for melting/casting instead of refining you can pay more than the competition and still get a good discount compared to fresh sterling from a jewelry supply company.

It's sculpture and sculpture is hard. Most coins have faces in profile because face-on is hard to do. Most of the face information is in the depth of field, of which you get very little room to work with when sculpting relief.
Silhouettes and profiles on the other hand give you plenty of information with ease and are more forgiving on the light details just as the way the eye reads it.

The best reading one of those is the 1916 coin, obviously, but the others are very readable if interpretations as opposed to high realism sculpts.
These days the level of detail you can make on a coin is fabulous. You start with a sculpt the size of a window and then scale it down until you get to the size you need to press into a given weight of metal. That's what mints do anyway. I figure that most rounds are made by digital sculpting. It can work well for somethings, but not others.
You can also see that a lot of the ancient sculpt is made in medium. Like the blobby faces and low detail. They read well in coin and were made in coin.
I don't know if they used scaling processes. So much of the ancient world impresses me that they may well have. But sculpting at size is just as impressive.

When spot price goes high, I shop around for fixed price coins I'm interested in that I can't justify when spot is low and buy the nice comems instead. These are coins that for whatever reason the coin shops don't price fix relative to spot and so get cheaper relative to other silver products at time of purchase. I'm still paying the same price, but I can talk myself into it more easily.
My last purchase of 80% quarters came to about 25 - 26/ozt, not counting a fluke of a good ebay find.

High altitude Wyoming so it's too cold for much besides root vegetables and short season greens, peas did fine too. Tried growing tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers etc the first year here, it was very disappointing and the tomatoes only ripened *after* a hard frost in early September killed all the plants lol.

I've had great yields of big tubers from Pontiac Red potatoes, they're pretty forgiving and grow successfully from Florida to Canada. I believe they're an indeterminate variety that does well with the vertical growing method you're probably considering.
