I took this advice and then got a credit card here in Australia.

Then I went to buy something, and at the check it said if I pay with credit card that I have to pay 3% extra ontop of the price.

Turns out the cash-back shit is only for Americans, in Australia you actually pay more for stuff using a credit card, and there is no cash back.

Exposing yourself to potentially insanely high interest debt for petty amount of cash back or airline miles is silly

Also, it incentivises spending, with the intent you start spending more than necessary, even if you pay the entire outstanding balance. Credit cards are fucking horrible and only edgy cunts or financially illiterate use them

the downside to credit cards is they can charge you if you dont have money, charge you even if the card is locked, and if they get stolen by a girlfriend and you dont want to report her she can charge unlimited things to it ever building your debt so you cant pay it off, note changing your card number or locking it wont stop her from getting her recurring youtube tv payments

the trick around this (and I don't, so I'm guilty of it) is to make your budget and stick to it on what makes sense. That's why I like YNAB for budgeting. Lots of useful ways to budget and plan for budgeting on what you wanna do with your money. Unfortunately it's just turned into a tracker for me since I'm suffering some bad lifestyle inflation.

I am trying to convince a friend to budget more because they made more than me and are significantly poorer but won't touch it. "Oh I don't need to budget" but is still sitting on like 3k of credit card debt and just making payments.

Gas stations where I live(new jersey) do this for gas, there's two prices for each type of gas, cash or credit.

Some small restaraunts/takeout places do charge a percent more as well for credit. The chinese food place near me only takes cash or zelle for some reason.
