I don't have a lot of knowledge with DE's. I picked Cinnamon since the default configuration seemed simple enough. Only switched back to linux 2 months ago or so, but I used obscure distros like Crunchbang a decade ago on terrible laptops that barely worked because I was a poorfag and fresh install windows wouldn't even run without crashing.

I have the exact same dilemma. I bought the M1 airbook because I wanted one with good battery time that doesn't get hot and doesn't use a lot of energy. Wanted to install Linux on it, but support was extremely low and probably is still pretty low.

Asahi linux is almost usable. Unfortunately it seems use Patreon for dev support which means the devs make more money the longer they take to do anything. I doubt I will switch to it though since it will probably have much worse battery life than the main OS due to a lack of optimization which is a killer on these ultra power efficient models.
