It's simple supply and demand. When market participants short link they're (By definition) borrowing link (if it's not borrowed, it's not called "shorting") that otherwise would just be sitting static in a lending pool somewhere, and they place it for sale on the open market. When you place link for sale (which wouldn't otherwise be for sale) in a market, you're increasing supply. Increased supply (with constant demand) means price goes down.
