It's a massive bubble. Investors flush with cash were putting money into anything they felt had the chance of being a unicorn. As long as the people involved were people who they felt like they should be able to do work worth 6 figures (white dudes from certain schools or white/asian people who are friends with white dudes from certain schools), they were goven enough money to pay people 6 figures - whether or not they were actually making anything that was making a profit.

The cheap money is over. The tech industry honeymoon is over. Hardware has stalled. Most engineers can't architect at a low level anymore. Everything is a cottage industry of a cottage industry.

Don't feel bad about not learning how to code if you haven't already; deep knowledge of some other field and the ability to actually think through problems and build high level solutions that people actually need (not that simply backdoor advertising or data for brokering) will be more valuable than being able to string together code.

I’ve been screaming from the rooftops that the software engineering bubble just had its blowoff top. People say a labor market can’t be in a bubble, but there’s no reason to believe it can’t. Many of the participants in the bubble have the same psychology as participants in other bubbles, they induce FOMO in outsiders (tons of other white collar wagies are trying to “learn to code” to get in on the easy money), when you scrutinize what’s actually happening you find a lot of it is bullshit with many software developers admitting they barely even work, you’re seeing bizarre phenomena like software wagies having two or three jobs at once with seemingly no issues.

It’s a bubble, especially the WebDev shit. Paying 22 year olds more than lawyers and senior electrical engineers to suck around with a website’s UI is a bubble, mostly funded by QE and easy credit.

Coooooding is a perfect storm of infinite margin and among the most boring work imaginable. I have made changes to my company’s code that made $50m in a year due to the scale of the company. My company hires thousands of engineers just for the chance at those type of margins. Many of my coworkers hate their job due to how boring it is, and literally won’t do work.
