The stock with 10x the premium has 10x IV. CCs all depend on your own vol expectations vs the market. In the end, you're making a bet that your own expectations are more accurate than the market is pricing
Whether you're holding 50% cash and a 10% premium or 50% cash and a 1% premium, the return is still half vs all in. Sure, you can hold more cash with the higher premium plays to make the same return, but if the underlying equity drops 10% then you've really made nothing. If it rises 20% then you've lost upside. You've given some gains to someone else. The market is saying these moves are likely, hence the premium

To understand why big moves are a negative for covered call plays, take two example cases:
Suppose the 10% premium ATM call play might see 20% upside and 20% downside within the timespan. Equally likely
>stock increases 20%, you collect 10% premium and it gets called away. Total = +10%
>stock declines 20%, you lose 20% but collect 10% premium. You sell. Total = -10%
On average you've made nothing. In the real world stocks can see a range of outcomes over a month so this example is really simplified, but I think it's enough to understand that if you expect +/-50% you'd lose hard selling 10% premium, and if you see low vol or skewed downside/upside with much larger upside then you can generally profit since puts/calls are priced symmetrically

In the end, unless you have some idea of downside volatility being lower than the market is saying, you won't make any sustainable profit off covered calls, on average. You have to be opportunistic in your picks. Most of the time, downside vol is pretty low so CCs are usually a pretty good strategy. We're in a bear market right now though, and despite the bear market we haven't seen VIX elevated much. At this point in time covered calls in general seem pretty bad, though there are definitely some good plays out there in certain sectors.

I haven't even touched on intra-month volatility and trailing stops.

But I'm not bagholding UUUU, because I have no intention to sell yet. Like I said, i'm patiently waiting 2-3 years for the uranium sector to take off, and DCAing over time to accumulate a large position. While I wait for it, I am selling CCs to lower my cost basis. Depending on how effectively I price it, it will pay for itself in 3-5 years or else exercise above my average, locking in profits. Lets say I get it completely wrong and Im an eternal bagholder - someone else would speculate in uranium too, and I can sell contracts to them too. Energy companies always seem to do well, and Id rather hold it than GME
I am also happy to do this since it prevents me from buying shitty meme stocks and risky options and keeps my capital focused. I also have stocks in sand, natural resources and WMT

I just meant that realized vol has been higher than IV in most of the positions I'm interested in right now, so covered calls don't make sense.
If you expect higher volatility than the market is predicting, buying options/spreads is the play rather than selling. The market neutral version being a straddle.
I don't do any complex multi-leg shit since the payoff is almost never worth the higher cost of dealing with lots of individual contracts. Those plays all feel like traps shilled by the brokers.

None of that rant addresses that if the downside isn't that bad and you have cash to average down, and get the smaller exit pump to your average you need, you walk away with the return, period. You don't make "nothing". If he had cash to keep going the guy in the example could make thousands.
If it doesn't pump but at least stabilizes and he has cash, he can keep bringing in money to eventually bail him out even if it takes a while.
You keep implying that it's the same thing as going all in when it's not.
Yes generally you have to have good taste, be opportunistic, and try to catch things at bottoms. But averaging in affords more leeway. And "bear market" is subjective, some would say this is a leg in a giant trading range.

No, you don't have to know that to make money selling cash secured puts. Pretentious nerds like you keep trying to overcomplicate it with long-winded BS "explanations" trying to debooonk what I use in real life to make higher returns than average. Someone could make money selling cash secured puts solely based on identifying likely bottoms on a daily candlestick chart, for example. No blah blah blah required.
Doing it my way is effectively like averaging into a dip, 100 shares here and there spread out carefully and eventually with a small pump you're out if it doesn't completely collapse. It's not the rocket science you're turning it into.

I'm not trying to debunk anything. I use covered calls too.
I think its useful to understand the dynamics instead of pretending its a free dividend. I've seen plenty of stories of digging a hole averaging down on a perpetual loser (with or without calls/wheeling), and also stories of frustration that a position got called away and then immediately pumped. Closest experience I've personally had is selling AMC calls at $4 and watching the stock suddenly 5x on meme money. That didn't bother me though - what frustrates me is when a position goes ITM after one week and then dumps back to breakeven in the last week before expiry. I generally close out those setups early nowadays.
If you have the right personality for it and can find good setups, covered calls (or puts) can be excellent.

People that were taking cheap debt and paying employees were shouldering the cost of 100$ a barrel oil. Now that interest rates are going up those companies are imploding and its going to collapse demand and the price will tank again.
The general stock prices of oil companies should come down too as they aren't making as much money, even though they should be holding reserves for investor payouts since they stayed on the OPEC+ script rather than meeting demand at the time.

I can't do anymore time in the wagecage bros.
It's unironically this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRT0Typtbto
I'm losing my goddamn mind. All I need is $2000/mo. My existence would be bare-bones but at least I'd have some semblance of control over my life.
HELP ME RIGHT NOW BROS! RIGHT NOW!!!!

I only started consistently making $5000+ a month when I had made it to ~300k in my trading account. Before that, i don’t think it would have been possible. I think bare minimum to make 2k a month would have to be 100k. Anything less and you’re gambling over and over again and you’re bound to lose eventually, leading to a spiraling series of revenge trades until you’re broke and back to being a NEET. Trust me. Been there. Get educated in a skill or trade, get lucky and build up a cash reserve, THEN escapee the wage cage. That’s my advice at least. At 26 I got my house, 2020 Audi and a Jewish trad gf. And no w2 job. If this isn’t the dream idk what is

>Trade goes sour, still holding. Now you're following the news for this dumpster fire and arguing with people about M&A plans and buyout possibilities, earnings beats etc.

Yeah, that's how a quick in-and-out two day swing trade turned into bagholding and averaging down on a a Canadian gambling company for six months and watching hours of Canadian Parliament and Senate footage to see if they would legalise online gambling(the most incredibly tedious shit I have ever seen). I got out of that one with profit though because they got bought out by PENN (which has since dumped). Sheer fucking luck. The "opportunity cost" of bagholding for six months of bullrun probably saved me from FOMO'ing into a bunch of sketchy shit as well.

Overall I'm still deeply in profit, but I've lost a whole bunch of money through shitty trades (and unrealized gains from not taking profits).

The reason why I'm apprehensive about this being the bottom is because there seems to be a somewhat strong sentiment that it is. Whether it's here or forums that discuss investing. People just keep talking about DCAing, holding and how everything's pretty much priced in. We're not even close to what the market looked like pre-Covid and no one can convince me that whatever the broader market was doing in those 2.5 years justifies them being valued 2x, 3x, 4x or even 5x of what their stock price was previously sitting at. Even in 2019 a lot of these companies were already overvalued and had growth priced in on like a 5 to 10 year horizon. And then the influx of retail started pumping everything like retards and institutions were making a shitton of money off of stocks that reached price targets that their analysts would have only expected to see years and years out. And now that artificially pumped shit is at a "discount" people slowly start throwing money at the stock market again because we're supposedly at "peak fear". To me peak fear isn't when I go on trading forums and there is a significant contingent of people that are still bullish and expect a reversal soon. Peak fear is when people start to pull every last penny they have out of the stock market and swear to never invest again. Peak fear is when we don't get these short pumps over and over again in which people get caught and start dumping their pink wojak folder. Peak fear is when there are no pink wojaks left because they got fucked by the market too many times to have any money left to throw at it. Peak fear is silence, not flashes of hope accentuated with screams when people get rugpulled.

And it can fall another 70% from where it is now. I am always cautious about using price anchoring as an argument why something has to go up again. It could be that whatever it used to be was significantly above where it should have been because the market acted irrationally. Retail got whipped up in a frenzy and threw everything they had at the market during Covid. And now that element is gone because people aren't getting paid to sit at home. They need their savings to buy groceries and pay rent. To me this just feels like a false bottom. A place where institutions can pump the local bottom and wait for someone to provide them with exit liquidity until the people that got fucked getting rugpulled become fewer and fewer until sentiment gets even worse and everyone starts closing their position because it stops being profitable.
