Sure, if you anchor your expectation on where the stock is heading when this is all over on their overvalued prices at the top. There are so many companies whose stock doubled, tripled or quadrupled in value during the pandemic for no reason whatsoever other than people just throwing their money at the market. Look at Nvidia. That was a 60USD stock just before the pandemic started. There isn't anything that happened with that company that justified its 800billion USD market cap at the end of 2021 before it went down. At its pre-Covid trajectory it looked liked it could be a 100USD stock in 2022. You see the exact same pattern with the broader market, just everything climbing itself into a frenzy with no consideration for the underlying value of the company, pricing in growth decades out. Compared to the growth we've seen in stocks in the last two years, during a fucking global pandemic, it looks like the rest of the market had been trading flat the previous 20 years. That's concerning to look at. Sure, if your time horizon is long enough then this shit is probably not going to matter to you. But people really don't understand what that time horizon can look like. It took the DOW 25 years to reach pre-crash values so people that bought in somewhere at the top and didn't sell had to have a time horizon of 25+ years. Who the fuck wants to baghold for 25 years? I'm young enough that I'd be only in my 50s by then but what about the people in their 50s right now? I doubt this is going to be a great depression level event but what happened in the last two years also looks atypical enough that I wouldn't just expect the markets to recover with a bullrun that pushes us above previous heights.

Volatility is basically a measure of how much divergence there is in average prices. Eg, look at the standard deviation on the historical prices. Options are basically based around trading the price of volatility.
Using the Black-Scholes model, you can calculate a contract's Greeks, which are things like delta, theta, gamma, vega, and rho. The strike and expiry are known - taking a given contract price (midpoint/last) you can work backwards to calculate the IV. You can think of IV as a proxy for demand or premium, too - something with 30% IV (eg WMT) is less volatile than something like a meme stock (which often have 250% IV on contracts)

But yes, when there's a sudden spike in prices, the market works to rapidly reprice everything, which causes a skew in volatility, and this is where vega becomes relevant. Like anon said, even buying a put on a spike can be done at a loss because you're paying an inflated price due to the vega/IV! When there's a large movement (up or down), option writers are the ones that make money.

Oil is Biden’s fault, I agree with you there. This jump in inflation is not oil driven though, if so services wouldn’t be inflating as well. Oil is at the very most 30% of what’s going on here. Besides the fucked up money supply, going America first also raised costs. What amazes me is how few people are aware that South America passed a ton of MAGA policies in the 80’s. They too had crazy inflation after. China was a hell of a deflationary factor as we are seeing. I’m not saying this is Trumps fault either though, I’m saying it’s complicated.

If you'd ever tried covered calls you'd know how wrong that is.
The winners run 30% in a month, get called away and leave you with 10% gains. Then the losers slowly dump 50% over several months of 5% payouts. By the time the losers bottom, you can no longer collect any meaningful premium without locking in a loss. You're bagholding praying for a recovery. Even if your covered call outperforms a blind buy and hold, you'll often feel you'd have been better off just running a trailing stop loss strategy.

Covered calls can be good money, but it's a unique bet on downside volatility. Functionally, it's the same as put selling.

I know. I've made plenty off covered calls. It's nothing like a "20-30% divvy" though.
Profiting off CCs can be a slow and frustrating wait, and sometimes incredibly painful.
To do well you have to constantly re-evaluate whether the IV is enough that calls are still worth selling, whether its best to close the position entirely 2 weeks before expiry because the calls went ITM and reversal risk exceeds remaining premium potential, and whether there's major macro risks that might make it sensible to cut a loss.
Ideally things run smooth and you collect some nice premium and the stock closes on OpEx right below your strike, but real life is rarely ideal.

>>49912613
If you have to sit on 50% cash to balance your strategy then the real yield is halved. If you martingale into your CC income play, eventually you'll blow up on some cyclical trash that goes bankrupt.

Im happy to see it drifting down because I want to accumulate more. Ideally it will hit $2-3 again and if it does, I'm doing a large buy. I ain for 30-45 DTE and I dont mind assignment because it means I can sell it above my cost basis. Planning to hold for 2-3 years. Don't be a nigger and pick something that doesn't suck. Bankruptcies rarely just come out of the blue on quality tickers.
>The ability to scale into a position doesn't change the fact that you're bagholding the initial play.
Being able to average in changes the game entirely, instead of being a victim bagholder who went all in it's now a matter of time before a bottom is found and because of your lower average you only need half of the pump to exit. Or if it crabs and you have shares near that price because you controlled your bankroll, you can keep selling calls and keep the money flowing.

It's not infallible and if there was an extended downturn you'll eventually run out of cash and have increased risk vs the original position, but again if you're not a nigger and have good taste in what you pick it shouldn't be likely for it to keep going down forever. There's no perfect strategy served up on a silver platter with no risk. Yeah if you did casinos, muh weed, cruise ships, memes, or commodities you might run into trouble. But picking things that simply won't bleed to death isn't as hard as cynics make it out to be.

You sound like a bagholder dude.
UUUU is down 50% in 2 months there's no way you collected premiums that offset that. You're literally what I described in that post.
It's nice that you've reduced losses and lowered your cost basis, but by the time it sells at a profit you'll have wasted 6 months for total of a 5% return.

That's why it's important to sell CCs on shit you legitimately think is unlikely to go lower. Don't sell upside on stuff because you think it won't go higher - that's what naked call selling is for (and its much riskier).
Covered calls are specifically a strategy for situations with asymmetric risk where you see slow or limited downside risk, and where you want to improve your odds by sacrificing upside potential beyond a range. You can also sell ITM calls for plays where you purely think something won't go much lower - the reward is lower but so is the risk, in theory.

So are you holding cash, or not? If you're holding cash then your real yield is halved. There's no "but the risk was" low. It's a simple fact.
I'm not trying to say that covered calls suck - I use them frequently. It's just a tool though, not some magic formula to success. It increases odds of winning outcomes, but it lowers the size of wins. If you're winning more than you're losing, this can be valuable.
