These are almost certainly bullet swaps, settlement only happens once the swap itself is ended. The shorters wanted to rope as many prime brokers into the trade as possible, maximize collateral damage, force the government to intervene on their behalf. At least that's probably what their intention was. Archegos' unclosed swap positions held by Goldman, Nomura, and Credit Suisse are all bullet swaps, so the position was always fully on these banks. Bullet swaps made it that they weren't even receiving periodic payments from Archegos, it was entirely the bank's position until the swap closed.

That's on paper, we know this for a fact. The reason they formed a liquidation agreement between themselves was because they realized the positions they held probably weren't closable. These banks were entirely long and short Archegos' portfolio all by themselves and they didn't realize it until it was too late.
