I mean, is it wrong? The whole point for link was to get data onto the Blockchain. But if the Blockchain can access the data, then the oracles aren't needed. Maybe for something that only humans can validate, but that's niche. What's really interesting is the idea of something like Ethereum and btc getting consumed by ICP. What effect would that have on their respective utility and prices? Sure you can natively integrate and still play on their respective Blockchains within ICP, but the most obvious usecase would be wrapping them and using them in the icp ecosystem because it's MUCH faster and MUCH cheaper. Btc/eth would be put in a cryptographically protected wallet held within a canister, like a vault. And the wrapped tokens given to users. Then all those two things are, are stores of value, eth would no longer use gwei, btc would not use it's traditional Blockchain anymore. They wouldn't need to, they'd have the option, but it's no longer in the users best interest. What would happen if gas became not sneeded? Noticable price impact I would say. It was the counterbalance to the faucet.

I think ICP smart contracts will take some market share from oracles when it comes to data inputs that don't need consensus. Since ICP SCs can just function the way web2 websites do when it comes to calling external data. Oracles may still be used for sensitive information that needs to be verified tho

Except they do, they can do HTTP requests to download data and then do whatever they want with it. The same way your browser makes an HTTP request to a server to download a website when you tap enter. This data however is not validated to be true through consensus which I think is what Oracles do. The vast majority of off-chain data will to through HTTP requests as it doesn't require any sort of special consensus like maybe a price feed may since the wrong price may liquidate millions of dollars or something like that

As I understand it, Chainlink is about introducing blockchain-like security to offchain data. If you just grab something by a http request, the data could be corrupt and therefore corrupt the output. Chainlink expands the "cryto-economic security" of blockchains to offchain data transmission.
