Okay with futures you have a few choices of what you want to invest in. You can buy index futures which track major world indexes like the S&P, German DAX, Nikkei, etc., there are currency futures for trading the Euro, Yen, Swiss Franc, etc. against the dollar, you have energy futures for oil, natural gas, etc., precious metals Gold, Silver, etc. so-called "softs" like lumber, livestock, and there are grains futures for wheat, corn, and all that. Within these categories there are a lot of different specific things you can buy and sell.
For low risk straightforward trading let's say you're bullish on equities since another bear market rally is imminent. The cheapest, lowest risk index future you can buy is the Euro STOXX 50 micro contract. The value of a single contract of that is around $4000 and the smallest amount you can buy is 1 contract, no fractional stuff.
So you open a futures account with Interactive Brokers or TDAmeritrade and you want to buy a single micro STOXX 50 contract and you don't want to use leverage because you want maximum safety. Open the account and deposit $4000 in it. Then buy the contract just like you would buy a stock or ETF.
If you wanted 2x leverage you could buy 2 contracts for a notional value of $8000 and since you have deposited $4000 you are effectively 2x leveraged. In futures the maximum leverage is going to be anywhere from 20x to 200x depending on the broker.
Index futures contracts expire quarterly in Mar, Jun, Sep, and Dec. So right now you would buy the Sep contract and if you wanted to hold past the expiration date in Sep, just before that date you would sell your contract and immediately rebuy the same contract in Dec. You can continue this for as long as you want, decades even just selling the expiring contract and buying the next contract.
Think of futures contracts similar to ETFs except the minimum size is much larger and there are tax advantages. The downside being you have to roll the contract quarterly

Margin requirements for different contracts are set by the respective exchange, in the case of Euro STOXX 50 that would be Eurex and the minimum margin to hold a single contract is currently $354. If you had $354 in your account and bought a single contract worth $4000 you would be effectively 10x leveraged. If the contract goes down $1 then you lose $1 of your deposit so now you have $353. If the Euro STOXX 50 contract you are holding goes down $354 and you only deposited that much you lose all your money and will receive a margin call to deposit more funds. Behind the scenes the money is "marked to market" at the end of everyday and sent back and forth between traders who are long or short against each other but on a practical basis your account goes up and down in real time throughout the day based on the performance of the contract you're holding.

The shuffling of money between winners and losers is done automatically behind the scenes and you have no real input on that nor should it really matter. Your contract goes up, your account grows, it goes down, you lose and it's all real time just like with stocks.
The main advantage with how margin works in futures is the fact that you can leverage to your heart's content. With some contracts, e.g., the micro Nasdaq contract you can get a leverage of closer to 15x if you want. Some treasuries have close to 100x available.

Trading regular futures like how I'm outlining is very similar to trading ETFs like I mentioned before. The advantages though are you can short as easily as you go long by simply selling a contract instead of buying.
