Let's talk about delta neutrality then. Lol.

If we wanna go over some delta neutral option trading strategies, I think talking about how to view gamma scalping without compromising the mandate of delta neutrality is a good idea.

In a market where spot - vol relationships are poor. It opens up a lot of basis and belly risk that can dismantle you.

So often, in a vol arb fund people will talk about running a beta/delta neutral profile. But for some newer investors on shitholes like /smg/, it can be easy to overlook the importance of how delta dollars change the assumed P&L path dependencies of a portfolio.

Ex: Lets say I buy 10 call options with a .45 delta, my position delta will read off 450.

Cool, so conventional thinking amongst new traders is that I can offset that long delta with an underlying with a similar beta and just buy puts to be "delta neutral". So we go and buy 10 put options with a delta of .45 and we are now delta neutral.

The problem with this, is that if one underlying is priced at $400 and the other underlying is priced at $4. Even if they are correlated, your portfolio will realistically be leaned one way.

Dollar delta is very simple to calculate. Its the amount of option contracts X contract multiplier X underlying price X delta.

So long story short: if you buy one .50 delta put on a product that tracks the S&P and one .50 delta call on a product that tracks the S&P. You are not delta neutral if one is priced at $20 and the other is priced at $250.

Yen shorts need to be careful. Japan has dollars in reserve. They're just not using them in yet.

The truth is, at their debt level some currency devaluation is necessary as an effective default on debt obligations. Same reason we inflate then lie about CPI: to partially default on social security little by little.

The danger is that you never really know when they're gonna say "ok that's enough" and pivot and use some dollars to slow the depreciation.

let me try to explain for you and all the non FX traders here
>1) countries buy bonds of other countries. Think of bonds as loans to the government, and if you let them mature the government pays you back. So 1 US bond is a GUARANTEED X% yield when it matures: in 2 years, 10 years, whatever. Currently, it's ~3.5% for US 10 year (which is considered high). The more people that buy bonds, the lower the yield % drops.
>2) Japan has been printing money to buy its own bonds since forever ago. That is known as QE. This keeps the bonds a) expensive and b) REALLY low yield (0.25% is their target). This is meant to CAUSE inflation since they have to print MASSIVE amounts of money to keep buying bonds (10 trillion ¥ in June alone), and keep the yen low for good exports since $1 is now ~134¥
>3) Japan instead of raising fed interest rates (in order to keep the yen from devaluing to FUCK and bring it back to ~$1->100¥, decided to keep them negative (-0.1%) and keep buying its own bonds, essentially printing money
>4) This also means that Japan will keep buying US bonds, which means that the bonds market in the US won't implode, however it accelerates Japan's complete collapse.
>tldr
Japan is harakiri-ing the yen because raising rates will nuke their stock market, and the current status quo benefits the US
>next step
Yen is devalued to shit, Bank of Japan compeltely loses yield control (they can't own EVERY bond, realistically), and it makes MMT and keynesianism (ie government can control the market/currency/inflation) look like the utter trash it always has been

And how does IV crush work? I thought it was just the value of a contract shredding on expiry, but that would be due to theta decay with <1 day isnt it?

I can’t comment on the rest, but this I can. IV is just a measure of the range that the options chain implies it could go to, if it spikes it is just as likely the stock will crab back down to nuetral as it will to finish where the new implied volatility is at. The absolute hands down best way to view derivatives are is if they are spot insurance contracts, and IV is your risk as the insurance seller

Well that's the thing, you can calculate a range of fair prices for a fixed expiry/strike on a stock, with IV being the only missing variable. Knowing the asset's HV lets you have a snapshot of whether a particular contract is over or under valued, which itself would be a form of market sentiment. I've also heard options described as trading volatility, like nothing else matters. It's interesting to think about.

I believe you're thinking of delta. A delta of 20 has a lower chance of expiring in the money versus a delta 80. You can use standard deviations with IV to find the expected trading range.

Yeah, but, like, what if they *did*?

Especially since plenty of bagholders like pensions are required to own some, right?

That's printing, what, ballpark half of 1.5 quadrillion yen for a currency base that's currently like 125 trillion? But most of that money would end up parked in other ultra-safe bonds, not like the sellers would go on some wacky spending spree with the money.

You are mixing their buying of their bonds with ours. They can keep QE'ing their own, while letting their balance of USTs roll off or even selling some to get dollars. And they if they want to stop the yen/dollar slide they'll want dollars.

It's problematic for many reasons ofc, but they have few good options. Especially if the US doesn't help them out with stabilizing their currency, they will be more inclined to say "well fuck you then" and dump em.

I suspect there's some tense phone calls happening between BoJ and Treasury/Fed.
