If you're looking to hold a fund then go with VOO (which has a lower cost than SPY). VTI or VT if you want more diversification. Just DCA every week/month. When the S&P 500 breaks above the 200 SMA it generally has lower volatility and you can increase your gains with leverage (like pic related), through buying 2X or 3X ETF's like SSO and UPRO. No problem. Hypothetically it's better to just lump sum with your money. The other anon is right about time in the market winning. But it could take a while for you to break even.

High IV has a higher price as a volatile stock is more likely to hit a certain price within a time frame. If IV increases or decreases while you hold then the option will gain or lose value. In general it's better to buy a relatively low IV (use IV percentile), and sell options with a higher IV. You can also use IV to calculate the expected price range with standard deviations. You can also find stocks with high IV and purchase the stock instead of the options. You get the higher volatility movement without the high option premium.

>Central banks customarily go into self-imposed silence ahead of important monetary policy meetings.
>there was no way policy makers could guide the market on how last week’s awful inflation data for May had changed their plans. But somehow people got the gist.
>Suddenly late Monday, it moved to virtual certainty that the Fed will raise by 75 basis points, and not the previously projected 50 basis points:
What happened? It’s probably best to try reading the New York Times, Bloomberg News, Axios or the Wall Street Journal, all of which published stories about the likelihood of a 75-basis-point hike as the afternoon progressed. None of these stories feature any on-the-record comments from Fed officials since the inflation data came out in Friday. However, they are all framed the same way, and lead the reader through the same comments made before the quiet period that had given the Fed some wiggle room to raise by more than 50 basis points. We can assume that this was a coordinated attempt to guide the market through trusted journalists, while just about staying in purdah. This is one of those times when you can believe what you read in the papers — the Fed has now set everyone up for a 75-basis-point hike on Wednesday. Anything else would be a huge surprise. The story, breaking first in the Wall Street Journal, arrived in time to accelerate what were already dramatic market moves

Definitely look into historical volatility and IV percentile. An IV% of 20 means that the IV has been lower than it's current state 20% of the time. And it's been higher 80% of the time. That's a good deal for the option buyer as the IV is low (good option price). And is more likely to increase in the future, increasing the value of your options. The downside is that the stock isn't expected to move as much. Also, IV generally increases more when stocks go down, and lowers when they go up. Best of luck.

> The trader buys 3000 shares, because if they lose the $0.10 per share ($15 – $14.90) on 3000 shares, they have only lost $300, or 1% of their account. With a looser stop loss at 14$, he can buy 300 shares at 15$. In both cases he loses 300$ if the stop is triggered. The looser the stop the smaller the profit, but protecting your capital is the number 1 rule.

Wouldn't this mean that the tighter the stop, the smaller the profit? Not looser? Or does looseness imply that you just aren't buying as many shares? The framing is strange to me because it seems to imply that your profit is 'always' better when you have a close stop loss set

im guessing it's that if you buy a ton of shares with a tighter stop loss, then due to gaps you're risking more? Whereas with a looser stop gap loss and buying less shares correspondingly, you're not risking a huge low liquidity bust?

>The looser the stop the smaller the profit
This is worded a little odd. The (potential) profit is smaller because you're only using 300 shares. Mostly this is saying that by using a smaller number of shares and a loose stop you give the trade a chance to work in your favor.

It's a little hard to tell without the full context, but it's not really due to gaps that you're risking more, it's because you're carrying 10 times as many shares. Gaps can take out loose or tight stops, but how much you lose is based on how many shares get stopped out.
