What are some obvious ways people waste money?

>> No.49457082

Not knowing how to fix even the simplest things.
>Oil changes
>fixing their grass
>swapping a battery in a phone
>changing tires every season
>putting silicone in their shower

imo this is the big one at least for me, getting hit with a 500-2000$ avoidable bill for something you can do yourself usually costs more than the base luxuries people want.

>Fixing their grass
people paying other people to mow their lawns, apply fertilizer and spray for weeds or other dumb shit, just one example of home maintenance I see lots of young people too lazy to do (I'm also young).

>Oil Changes
Certainly more expensive up here, but much cheaper to diy along with other vehicle maintenance

>fixing shit
In general it's just cheaper to fix things. This year alone had to fix my wifes cracked camera lens on her phone ($2 part), my vacuum ($0), her hairblower ($0) and did the brakes+rotors on her car and mine for parts cost only. I'm saving tons of money and enjoy the projects. I hire younger people to work for me seasonally, most have no desire to actually learn how things function, and it's expensive in todays world not to be able to swap a plug on a device or make simple repairs to various poorly made things we buy.

If you work 40 hours a week that is like what 1.3k after tax? I live in the UK so obviously things will be different here but 1.3k is poverty wages for us. Just for a room to rent in a shared house you are looking at £700-£800 a month, plus a couple hundred on bills. If you move to the outskirts of the city where things are cheaper you can save money on rent but that is immidiately offset by your daily commute due to how expensive public transport is here (you can't park in the cities so you can't drive into work either). On 1.3k you will be lucky to have £100 a week left for food and all other expenses after rent and bills is taken out. To put that into perspective, if you are on unemployment here and you manage to get the bennies people to cover your rent + bills, they will give you £73 a week to live off of. You are basically better being on bennies if you can swindle it than working a low paying job.

We went with white dutch clover, but it is really dependent on your climate. I know many go for more of a micro clover which I think has a better visual appeal. You can also mix and match them for a variety of flower colors if you want. Also remember to leave cuttings on the ground, clover are nitrogen fixers but to be effective they need to rot out and feed the soil again.

It is good to encourage people to step back from the consoomer mentality that is instilled in the American public. Learning to budget, save, and invest and cut out the unnecessary spending is one of the best things you can ever do for yourself. My net worth exploded once I began to comb through every aspect of my life. Pennies add to quarters which add to dollars which add up to entire hours of the work week. Hundreds create thousands and the thousands is where you can snowball into "made it" status. Also, the tighter your budget, the more impactful can be things like dividends etc. Your money is only as effective as how you choose to spend it. And every 4 months "dividend season" rolls around and it's starting to get more and more comfy. It's like enjoying a tax return, yet it happens multiple times a year. Suddenly I am not solely dependent on my wagie check, and every quarter things just get "that much better".

You know what really gets me about these people? It's not that they're self-righteous or annoying.
It's that they preach all day long about being selfless, caring about others, having "empathy". But when it comes to things that we all value, work hard for, sacrifice important things for, their "empathy" only stretches into their familiar territory.
When confronted with someone who busted his ass to get a house, start a business, get fit, etc, they can't put themselves in his shoes to save their life. It's have vs have-not regardless of what we might have sacrificed to get the nice things we have.
Be envious, fine. But don't pretend the world should just provide you with precious resources that people had to spend long brutal hours crafting into existence. Don't pretend bagging groceries at fred meyer is injecting so much value into society that you deserve a single-family house to yourself. Enough with these talkers.

But if you looked at the stats you'd know that's not true. Investing isn't the only way to make money. People who are self-made tend to do it by busting their ass making a product or service in their free time when everyone else is out getting drunk and getting laid.
>Unless you are a boomer and in that case it is that you bought it for a literal tenth of the price of today's market.
True, because people's wages are priced in depreciating federal reserve banknotes, which is what they should actually be complaining about. But instead they're going to continue blaming the billionaire boogeyman who has no control over central bank policy.

Not buy much. DIY supplies have gone up and oil change services have gone down. By the time a DIYer buys the supplies, does the change, cleans up and gets rid of the oil its a wash due to the wasted time better spent elsewhere. If you want to deal with a few years of grass overgrowing the clover but eventually having clover take over
> mow on the lowest possible setting
>good time to also aerate the soil
>add mixute of composted manure or wtv other top soils to about 2-3 inches, add some sand for drainage, your weather will determine these things
> plant a boat load and dont cut for a while.
> repeatedly seed
> MUST be done in spring or fall because it wont germinate well in extreme heat.
> watering it in early stages is imperitive
> weeds will show up due to exposed soil, however the clover will eventually overtake them as the soil conditions improve

If you want just clover, unfortunately will need to rip the grass and either remove it entirely or chop it up, flip it upside down and repeat that process for a few weeks until it's basically dead. Avoid killing all the soil life with sprays and other garbage.

Not sure about chamomile, you can go for a long herb-combo lawn but it will certainly stand out as messy vs. clover. Wildflower+chamomile lawns are beautiful though. Moss requires pretty specific conditions I'm not sure how it would hold up here, in a well shaded place with good moisture retention would prob do well, but again I'm unsure. I do see moss+paver combos do well under tall mature trees for shade though, which is an option.

I have an african tortoise that eats my grass, he wanders around my yard like a roomba and bites the grass down to literal putting green length. I have not touched my mower in the last 4 years. Takes 5 minutes to rake up his turds every once in a while and since they are just plant fiber they basically dissolve once they dry out in the sun after a couple days.

He goes in there at night and it keeps him from digging, I also put an electric heating pad in there during the winter because night time temps get a little colder in my climate than their native habitat. Some people bitch, moan, and complain about minimum wage, but that's what most people are worth labor wise. They will never try to improve on themselves in the workforce. Biggest and most obvious wastes of money are rent, insurance, and debt interest expense. All three are pure waste that give nothing back.
Most of the shit posted in this thread has some opportunity cost associated with the alternative options (such as doing tasks yourself). It may or may not be worth the cost, but at least a good or service is provided that adds some form of value to the consumer's life.

Rent is paying for someone else to own something, essentially giving them a free asset.
Insurance is paying for someone else to gamble on your stuff or your life. You're basically a casino operator except you always lose because you have no edge. (unless you know you're at increased risk or already actively have some medical condition that'll be subsidized by some other suckers' insurance premiums).
Interest expense is pretty obvious - just a direct loss of capital.

Luckily debt has negative real yields right now so debtmax chads just collect free value in exchange for a rapidly decaying currency expense... which brings me to the last big waste, holding fiat currency. There are millions of losers out there who thing they need 3 months, 6 months, or even multiple years worth of backup savings. Some leave their entire net worth in savings accounts. All of them just passively lost 10% of their wealth these past 12 months alone.

Honorable mention for taxes. People will complain about a $10/month video subscription while paying $5k or more in annual taxes in some democrat hellhole. Do everything you can to minimize your taxes, or delay them indefinitely if possible. Unfortunately, it's generally impossible to avoid taxes entirely, so if you have no alternative it's hard to call it a "waste".

This isn't a bad post and all, but this analysis of insurance is retarded. It's not "pure waste" to take the chance of having your entire financial situation ruined by a random car accident or injury off the table. Never having to worry about fitting a sudden five or six figure emergency expense into your contingency plans (or make your loved ones eat a sudden six or seven figure loss of your expected income) is bona fide value received for the money you spend.

It's a pretty bad post. His analysis of rent is also very naive, the kind of thing that someone with a high school understanding of finance would say. It's obviously true that when you rent you're not building wealth through home equity, but if you live in an area with an overpriced/bubbly housing market –which some people literally have to, for their careers – you'll often be better off renting. As long as you invest the money you'd have spent on a down payment (and on the other costs of home ownership) in something else, you'll often come out ahead.

There are parts of the world where everybody has this idea about renting, "it's literally just throwing away money." The actual effects are pretty brutal. People tie up huge chunks of their net worth in real estate that in practice is nearly unsellable and even on paper they'd have done better to just stick their money into an ETF that tracked the US market or whatever. And yes, that underperformance factors in the money they'd have "wasted" on rent.

The truth is that renting isn't a waste of money, you're getting something for what you pay, the ability to live somewhere WITHOUT tying up a ton of your money in real estate. Sometimes owning your home is a great financial move and sometimes renting is just mathematically better, and that depends entirely on the market conditions of the place you want (or have) to live in.

Sure I exaggerated a bit, but the idea is that the biggest waste will likely lie with the biggest expenses. People take these things for granted despite going out of their way to chase frugality in the smaller expense categories. The opportunity cost is more than their savings.

Well then I'm screwed because this mold has been in/on my AC vents for 15+ years and all in my shower for about 8 years

Its hard to tell the mould type from a photo but certainly isolating your leak and repairing is imperitive.

A few things could be happening here. The wood in your walls is probably swollen up sealing gaps and festering with mold, beyond potential for rot, mold should always be taken seriously. I would consider looking into your ventilation situation before tackling the mold as its certainly contributing. Is the vent clear and moving air? Can a more powerful fan be installed?

Once the shower is cleaned im willing to bet a good week of drying without silicone is required or its just going to come back. Sorry for the bad news, but definately this isnt something you should ignore for your own health.
