Here is a chart from leddit some virgin posted about applying to 678 jobs, getting 8 responses, and not 1 offer. Does this actually fucking happen in the US?
I’m quitting my bullshit government job to move to a new state, but seeing this shit is getting me scared for the job hunt, is it truly that brutal nowadays or are redditors just so retarded they apply for jobs they are super under qualified for or write their resume in comic sans or something?

Listen we have something called social corporate responsibility. Ok. So, we have to reflect the community we serve. Thats the slogan.

You cant just walk into a role because you belong to a group, but every one competes within their own group. So I've started putting that im bisexual down on documents because the that enables me to compete in a smaller pool, so there's more chance of promotion. Does that make sense?

So it isnt that one group is favoured, theres just competition within disperate groups for the overall pool of roles. Targets play a big part in this, i never hit my targets :(

Shit like this makes me happy I went into medicine, there is a lot of bullshit about medicine but it is actually one of the few fields left where you have almost a guaranteed 100% chance of getting employed and if you go into the right specialties you are in a boys club where women are often looked down upon.

>> No.49361078

I just don't care anymore. I don't work any more than absolutely necessary for the most pressing expenses, I quit jobs with little to no notice, I barely work enough to not get fired when I hold them, and I go out of my way to make sure I pay as little in taxes as possible. Until this shit gets better everything can just burn to the ground for all that I care, and I will continue to use investing as a vehicle to grift fat off the land to continue to survive until the situation improves. The single best form of protest is inaction, enjoy slurping up a bunch of quota-filling hires not based on merit and running businesses into the ground.

Probably something is wrong with the resume, he should pay to get a professional to do his resume for him. Also go to a temp agency, the jobs will likely be crap but it will keep you busy and the fact that you are doing literally any job makes you more employable. It's like how if you have a gf, other women are more interested in you because the simple fact that you already have one makes you appear more worthy.

You have to have a bachelors degree in my field to get the job that I have, but my employer said less month they had zero applicants. This month they had some and did interviews, and according to them one of those people was actually qualified for the job, and they are expecting to give him an offer. Granted the starting pay is low (we have something like an automatic promotion system where if you don't get fired the pay gets good in year 3). However, none of the applicants know that we have so few applying, probably if people knew how little competition there was we would get more applicants. We have had people quit really early on when they realized they had to be here for a couple of years to make a decent living.

In my field, and for my particular employer, there is a lot of retirements and people leaving for better jobs in the industry. If you worked here for 3-5 years you could get higher paying jobs based on having experience with this particular employer.K2JDR

Both. Once you are a residency trained doctor you just have so many options to choose from, especially if you are willing to move to more rural locations. Hospitals salivate to hire you and you can always go into private practice when you're tired about all the hospital bullshit. Pretty recession proof job as well.
But don't get it wrong, medicine is filled with bullshit nepotism. I'm a senior developer at my company so I'm only able to comment on my anecdotal experience interviewing zoomers. Short answer? Zoomers are simply incompetent. Longer answer: I continue to be very disappointed at the lack of technical expertise when I interview zoomers. I've done interviews with zoomer candidates who are going for junior software developers and junior DevOps engineers. They just don't have the fundamentals of how computers actually work. Sometimes even having any programming experience is too aspirational to expect from zoomers. I wish I was joking. I've interviewed a candidate where they said their experience primarily consists of clicking on things in the AWS management console. Most zoomers have no idea how networking works. Most zoomers have no idea how containers actually work (DURR IT'S LIKE A VM...). I'm not expecting very comprehensive answers, but I get "I have no idea" all the time. It's really strange. Software quality is going to be on a very steep decline in the coming decades (not that it hasn't already been on a decline...)

This is dire but I can offer one potential (but very unlikely) explanation.

When I was studying my masters in aus I had savings to get me through but wanted the dole to help out.

I was required to apply for like 14 jobs a fortnight (something like that). I didn’t want a job so I spent 5 minutes sending my resume to receptionist positions every fortnight.

As a male I didn’t get a single response over one year.

Worked a treat. Maybe this person has been sending a resume to positions they’re clearly unsuited to. Maybe they don’t really want to work.

Low quality applications:
- every application is generic/identical instead of modifying for the role
- no focus on what they want i.e. scattering approach. Employer can sense this immediately
- presses a button on LinkedIn and thinks this is enough
- avoids lengthy employer's own job application site because lazy
- and this is before probably having a useless degree and applying to jobs irrelevant to the degree field.

It only takes improvement in all areas above to make a 100x improvement on chances of getting a job.

This unironic boomer hack is to shake their hand. Literally apply online, call the company up and make some stuff about getting contacted for an interview. You can also show up with your resume and say hr contacted you to show up or you thought there was a career fair.

Jobs are like dating, all the online stuff doesn't actually work, you have to cold approach. Humans aren't meant to make hiring decisions based off of data.

>> No.49365640

Cold applying to jobs doesn't work. Job postings you see online are not for hiring. They are for justifying immigration visas, firing someone, promoting someone, etc. Companies post job postings and say "we tried but no one was qualified," so it ok to promote my niece or fire this guy I hate or hire this immigrant for 1/2 the salary.

If you actually want a job you should network with someone who works there or get in touch with a recruiter at the company, or work with a head hunter if you're lazy. Then as long as you don't completely butcher the interview you'll get the job because they are actually looking for someone to hire.

The more informal, in person your application is, the more real the job is going to be. If you want to work at a company, have an IQ over 80, and aren't autistic, then the recruiter will find a position for you. If your cold applying to a job posting on some website that is neatly categorized, has extremely specific titles and requirements. Its almost guaranteed a fake posting.

In most big companies only need like 20-25% workers are critically valuable, maybe other 10% are for smoother operations, nowadays Companies hire to improve bottom line or please the government, 70% percent of employees have no immediate effect on companies earnings, the big question is why do they hire so many people. Honestly people typically do it the other way. I've worked with government most of my career. People that are junior (younger people) work with the government a few years then jump ship to industry. Senior government people (SES+) usually cap out around 200K a year with the exception of certain areas in medicine, research, and finance (which maybe go up to 300K). Someone in that same level of seniority in industry will likely make double or more. Also at that seniority level you typically see people coming BACK IN from industry because at that point they don't need the money but want the capture over policy, regulation, etc.

Dude you're way too full of yourself. If you've never worked with docker it doesn't take long to learn. If you think not knowing shit like that is important for a junior position you're retarded. Even senior engineers don't need to know the ins and outs of docker/kubernetes/whatever they can learn it when they need to.

>but I get "I have no idea" all the time.
These candidates probably know a million things you don't. 90% of everything to any software engineer is always something that's unknown and has to be learned, and will also be deprecated and relearned, forever.
If I were to point you at 10 random azure services and asked you how to run them you'd also 90% of the time tell me "I don't know", because to know even a quarter of everything that is out there is impossible. Everything is based on learning and relearning constantly.

The code base was already fucked when I got there because it was as old as me. When I was working there my job was basically to be an archeologist and find out how something was programmed 20 years ago and how to get it to work in modern .net.

No one even knew where the servers this shit was running on, let alone who was responsible for maintaining these things (literally companies that don't even exist anymore in some cases). I had to write a custom encryption/decryption pipeline based off of ancient code full of comments like "//needs fix" and "//ask bob about date because it doesn't work" that was based around just scrambling timestamps around because there was no standard https at the time it was set up.

For example once I found out that the way this thing was designed 15 years ago it would stop working on every day the day and month were the same day (january 1st, february 2nd, etc) , at a specific time.

I also never even told my boss about it because my team got let go so screw that. This company manages 20 billion dollars in retirement assets btw and the shit I was untangling was handling actual people's accounts and there were dozens of repos that could be dependent on it (it's not like you even know because the whole thing was a tower of babel). There is a huge amount of code debt out there that is yet to be repaid.

I got interviewed by a girl who didn't seem to know anything or could answer a single question and I looked her up later on linkedin and she was like 20 years old, I have no clue why she was in charge of this in person interview after I spent literally 2 months going through the stages to actually get an interview. I got so sick of all this shit I just gave up, like fuck it I'm not contributing no one really wants the white guy candidate anyway.

>>49377743
pic related. Who gives a shit about tcp vs udp though, seriously, these questions don't matter even for 99% of senior devs. I've written network clients and servers that handle little and big endian (old shit) that swapped between tcp and reliable, ordered, udp (it is stupidly easy to get udp to act like TCP, a high schooler could figure out how). No one needs to know the difference unless you're actually working with it and if that's the case it takes less than a day to figure out how to properly write your own system if you even need to do that in the first place (you don't). This is the shit I'm talking about. Not knowing about tcp or udp in a job interview doesn't fucking matter in the slightest because 99% of software is learning new frameworks and systems.

You’re a retard with pathetically low standards and part of the reason why everything is so bad these days. I’m not saying you need to have a textbook definition memorized. But if you put something on your CV and I ask you an extremely basic question and I get a blank stare in response then it looks absolutely ridiculous. I’m always very forthcoming with my expectations and letting candidates know that I don’t care much about “right” answers. I care more about how people think and reason about things and “uhhh I have no idea” isn’t a good answer. Especially when you’ve bullshitted about it on your CV. Obviously knowing TCP or UDP isn’t important for day to day work, but we’re literally trying to gauge how much this person with not much experience knows. Often I follow up with a question around troubleshooting a connection issue and how they would approach that and again, most people have no idea. That’s the part where I start getting iffy.

The problem I’ve had with the zoomers we’ve interviewed and hired is there’s a pattern of not really experimenting when there’s a problem. As soon as they encounter a problem, they reach out to me or someone else and says “it’s not working”. They don’t say “this isn’t working, I’ve tried X, Y and Z and still haven’t made any progress. Do you have any ideas?” Instead I have to go over extremely basic things (e.g. did you check the logs?) over and over again.

If you have any skills you may have to start your own business. Don't expect great money at first but if you hit on a profitable niche you can gradually scale up. Not gonna lie though, it will be harder now with the economy tanking and everyone having less disposable income, but that's going to affect pretty much everyone and layoffs will ensue.

To add onto that when you mention logs, at my last job the logging and error monitoring was all over the place or mostly nonexistent so I set up error monitoring software that could track errors at multiple levels with tagging and do things like trace the error from the backend to the frontend while seeing the state on the frontend side (there were always emails about what to do about error monitoring/tracking for like 6 months when I first got there and no one was doing anything about it so I asked if I could fix it and my boss said sure).

The thing I found was called Sentry and for the entire business it would have cost like 40 dollars per month or something (total not per seat and it fulfilled all of our compliances) and even after I integrated it (it plugged in perfectly) and had it set up in docker and everything the guy above my boss said that he couldn't approve the 40 dollars a month TOTAL because we were already paying thousands and thousands a month for SolarWinds (I shit you not).
I got sent some links to solarwinds's docs that you have to pay to even look at (huge red flag). I went through so many pages of shit across multiple meetings and we couldn't figure out what service could even help us let along how to the fuck to just plug it into asp.net. It was lacking all standards of modern consumer documentation (basically an sdk dump).

Everyone was more senior than me and pulled the "this isn't working" thing every day because things would break constantly. I set up things to show what builds were passing tests or which ones weren't at certain dates (because there were 40+ repos I shit you not). Otherwise they had no way of knowing what commit actually broke where (they didn't write any tests). I tried to explain it to my boss and he didn't get it. I hope they just collapse under their own weight because I spent a lot of time trying to clean up their shit and was only met with this learned helplessness response from everyone.

In 30-40 job apps to positions at 8 different companies I got contacted by 6 of the 8, from that I got 5 interviews. I went through multiple phone and zoom rounds and was invited to final round on-site with 4 companies. I accepted a job offer from the first on-site which was my first choice, and I declined the other 3 on-site interviews. Two of them still wanted me to do the interview even after I told them I accepted another offer.

I did not expect such a high response rate and to have such success in the interviews. If you have in demand skills, you will be contacted.

If your only getting a 1% response rate, then you either aren’t a match for the job, or you’re resume skills and self promotion skills are horrible.

Reading what you wrote I wish I was in the position to give you a chance. I got 2 degrees at the same time myself. Maybe try to make a business doing something on fiverr/upwork and then also make a website to accompany it. Write in your resume the time you weren't working you were actually doing this business you created (2020-2023 business owner), list the revenue you made from fiverr on your resume to show you actually can make money, in interviews make it seem like you were actually getting website conversions from the site you made to accompany your business (that was mostly revenue from fiverr work but they don't have to know just know your funnel and say your ran google ads). It's tough out there friend.

I wish my job paid me that much and gave me benefits like that. Thanks for the advice but honestly I feel checked out a bit. I'm not saying I was perfect but I really busted my ass in college and hs, I studied abroad, I did internships, I actually gave a shit and learned useful in-demand skills and it seems like it was useless. The idea of "hustling" for pennies on Upwork, making some shitty Wordpress site and "reskilling" (JUST LEARN PYTHON DUDE, BOOTCAMP CODE BRO) or doing meme shit like freelance SEO is soul-annihilating. I'm pretty sure I'm getting keyword filtered in applications even though I optimized each one. I could just lie and say I'm black or trans but it'll be obvious once the interview round comes, plus why would I want to work for a corporation or government that obviously hates me? If my resume and knowing fucking SQL and R doesn't help me, I'm fucked and I don't care anymore.

I'm probably going back to school for a master's in education, yep that's even worse but I don't care anymore. They'll have to hire me there even as a white guy because the teacher shortage is apocalyptic. I want the minimum amount of work possible with time off and a minimum of benefits, I don't care about status or pay or using my skills. I just want to have enough to afford a 1 bedroom apartment, a beater car, and rice and beans while not worried about my next paycheck.

Well what were you planning on doing with your degree? You can do whatever for your temporary business and just use it to try and get where you wanted to go before.
You could do product photo photography or something like that and maybe expand to doing long lens orthographic images to sell for 3d modeling on artstation or something like that, maybe move on to 3d scans or something. There are a lot of random things you can do you just need to make it seem to employers that you are useful somehow.

My grandpa lost hearing in his right ear from coronavirus. Since the spike proteins are now known to travel in the blood at the same amounts as actual coronavirus for up to a month after getting the vaccine (pfizer said it would be muscular only but that was shown to not be the case), it could easily have been the spike proteins from the vaccine that did that. I'm so fed up with all of this too.

I feel sorry for you dude. This is depressingly vindicating. I'm 30, tested at just the bottom for "gifted" at 18. Have never done anything. Autistic, spaced-out, a little schizo, extremely anxious. Somehow the last 12 years have managed to slip me by without me being able to do a damn thing. Always been mediocre with maths, can only do words, and in my autistic way. I'm a born loser, can't even NEET because I'm too incoherent and despondent to squeak by in that lifestyle with smart decisions. The few times in my life I've tried my absolute hardest, it amounted to nothing. Everyone around me said I wasn't trying hard enough, that being in the top 5% in a large company for performance metrics doesn't merit promotion from a starting position. I've fucked it all up. It's depressingly relieving to hear that I could've been an ubermensch chad instead of a meek retard and I still would've lost. Again, sorry you have to get a taste of what it's like. I empathize.

I just can't help but feel that I'm missing out. Not on specific lived experiences so much as possessing the inherent capacity to process stimuli, catalogue memories, and synthesize information, which might make a life more fulfilling. I've dated some girls who were math majors, one competed with another girl for the top score in our national jurisdiction of tens of millions of people, and the way that she seemed to be constantly engaged by the world around her, eager to read books, to speak and to listen, to draw; to create, it was enviable. She was actually quite miserable, as a hedonistic narcissist that couldn't stop blowing up their life by fucking with people, compulsively jacking off and fattening themself on sweets. Nonetheless, I was under the impression that the intensity of her conscious experience; the titillation with all things she encountered, and the satisfaction in her own actions were sufficient to keep her going. Something about the way her eyes lit up when she talked about patterns of prime numbers, which I could never appreciate as a pale nigger, tacitly communicated this idea of being incomplete.
