Ok so here’s how this all works.

We turn on the app and pick out schedule.

They start sending delivery offers. They tell us how much the delivery will make us, where we have to get the food and where we have to drop it off.

Now I won’t take any delivery that shows to be under 10 dollars.

Most drivers won’t either. So what happens is we click decline and that offer is passed on to the next driver. This happens over and over until someone is dumb enough to take the delivery. By this time your food has been cooked and put on a shelf to get cold.

I remember reading that for Doordash at least, the way tips work is drivers are paid a base amount based on the distance between the restaurant and the customer, and if the tip is less than the base amount the driver doesn't actually get any of it. Broccoli, carrots, eggs, that sort of thing, you don't make a meal out of them, you add a small quantity to a dish. For example fried rice, it's mostly the oil and the rice, small amount of vegetables and one egg. Full meal, healthy, extremely cheap.

Also consider what you can do with lesser used legumes. There are a lot of really excellent, dirt cheap dishes that can be made with garbanzo beans or lentils. This is a good option for when you get sick of the classic rice and pinto beans combo.

I live in Greece which was synonymous to poor for the past decade, and i only tip when i am pleased with the quality of service. Food delivery only gets it at the door if they are early and/or pleasant. Waiters get it only if I ate well. The norm here is to NEVER tip at all, but i found i get better service the next time if I fork over those breadcrumbs. Forget 10% btw, coins only.
