I'm not from LA but near it and I can tell you it's pretty bad.
In addition to what others have said, driving around there is terrible as well. Loads of traffic and accidents all the time. Anywhere near the beach is going to be crowded as ass. The people are intrusive, dismissive, and can be outright rude.
Alhambra is the only part I thought wasn't completely terrible, it seemed to have decent public transport and was cleaner. If LA really is your dream, and you believe you can cope with the things mentioned in the thread, I recommend Alhambra.

Ideally I would live in a cabin in the woods and nobody would bug me.
