In general, what's to stop a pod of 10 or so whales from opening a 100x leverage long position on something and then pumping it themselves? To make it raise less flags they could even just have one of them open then long position and then splitting the profit afterwards.

And to educate you, shorting is selling before you actually buy:
>sell at 9800
>you now have 9800 in limbo
>buy when its lower, for example at 9000
>you now have 9800-9000=800

if you short at 9800 but the price keeps going up you will buy at a higher price than what you sold for and will end up in the negative.
