Ok guys I am scared.I would like to know what my options are and if anyone has been in a garnishment situation before. They are threatening to take half of my income. When I get ahold of the irs is it possible for me to talk them down to less than what they are threatening to take? Ask any questions. I just an extremely scared as I just got a house and have a baby in the way

Anon, how come you didn't notice? It's your tax return, you're supposed to review and sign it before it's submitted even if another person did it for you. Honestly, if someone claimed kids that are not mine on my tax return, I would notice right away and demand a correction. But the fact that you gave her half of your "refund" means you probably knew what was up. By the way, what did you do with your half?

>> No.441418

>>441394
She did it online. She asked me for all kind of info and I willfully gave it to her. Half was just her finder's fee if you will. I blew the money on frivolous things. I never had access to that amount of money at once before, and it showed in my management of said money.

You're on the hook. You are responsible for your own tax return, even if it's prepared by an accountant. You couldn't rat on your mother in law if you wanted to because of that. My advice is to pay in full - the IRS collects with interest.

PS: You have some serious fucked up sense of morality if you think that it's admirable that you won't 'rat' on a lady who willfully fucked you out of $11k and took like $4k of it for herself.

Meh. I've taken aggressive positions on my taxes for years. Been through 7 audits in the last 2 years and probably 15 total in my lifetime. I win most, and I lose a few. I'm ahead by low-figures all things considered.

But if you're going to dance the dance with the IRS, be prepared to pay immediately if you lose. OP lost. Time to pay.

Not true. Smart people can and do get in this situation. My dad was poor and when my parents divorced, the court hired a "minors counsel" lawyer to advise the judge on what custody arrangement we - the kids - would benefit most from. Scumbag "counseler" sided with my scumbag mother, so my dad refused to pay him. How can you own court-appointed lawyer fight AGAINST you in court? So they garnished his wages the maximum that they could, something like 25%.

It ended up costing him over $40,000 btw.

Ouch

>> No.441481

Around 1990 my dad owned an auto supply business. Everything was sold on credit. When the recession hit, 11 businesses that he sold to went bankrupt. They never paid, except for a few thousand here and there that the mafia collected for him (side story - my dad gave some equipment to a mafia guy when he was setting up his own business. A few years later said mafia guy was headed back to prison and didn't have the money to pay my dad. So he asked my dad for a list of deadbeats and sent some guys around to collect.) Anyway, the IRS said my dad owed taxes on the sales he never got paid for.

My dad transferred all of his assets to other people - house, a dozen cars, and a half dozen rental apartment buildings. The IRS went after them all and had control of most of them for several years, but eventually my dad managed to keep everything except for the property the business was on (now long since bankrupt itself.) The IRS tried to attach 100% of his wages. He ended up getting a real estate license and was paid on commission. Then he went into loan origination, first for IPI Financial, and then freelance. That was all on commission and he set it up so that the money was being transferred around through attorneys. The IRS knew he was getting paid somehow, but they could never figure out how. No regular wages means the IRS can't attach anything.

The court battles were made for TV. The IRS attorney had never lost a case. My dad had a crooked Jew attorney who owed my dad a favor because my dad hid some assets for him during a divorce. My dad's attorney ended up suspended for 3 years and the IRS attorney was fired.

The IRS was supposed to have 7 years to collect, but they kept filing extensions and it turned into 15 years. He was finally free of them in 2005. The IRS even contacted me a few times after I turned 18 looking for another angle. During the court battles he brought in our congresswoman and one senator (Chris Dodd). Dodd told him he should write a book about it.

>> No.441483

Of course, the IRS was after my dad for 6 figures in 1990 dollars. You might not want to go through that for $11,000. Just get a lawyer and negotiate a payment plan.

From "Mainstream Science on Intelligence" (1994), an editorial statement by fifty-two researchers:

"A very general mental capability that, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience. It is not merely book learning, a narrow academic skill, or test-taking smarts. Rather, it reflects a broader and deeper capability for comprehending our surroundings—"catching on," "making sense" of things, or "figuring out" what to do."

What's even funnier is that he paid his mother-in-law with no credentials $3500 of his own money when he could have paid a professional accountant like $100-150. Even if he only got half the return, he wouldn't owe the IRS $11,000.

Dude, I'll throw you a bone - it's possible that because you jacked up your return that they just charged you the full amount of the return, plus interest and penalties. You should hire an accountant to recalculate your return and amend the paperwork if there's money to be saved. The IRS won't help you or recalculate your return for you.

Normally I'd say just research and do it yourself, but this topic is clearly over your head.
